Ephesians 2:1-10

I. We were all spiritually dead…v 1-3

            - Tells us that our sins have made us spiritually dead.

- All were…some still are…Paul does not paint a pretty picture-true for all humanity

- This is important…foundational to Christianity

- Just like the rest of mankind.


            A. Qualities of the dead

                        - Not alive

                        - Don’t respond

                        - Have no hope

            B. Paul uses this illustration for a reason

                        - All understand

                        - This is how we were/are

                        So for us that means

1.      Not alive

2.      Won’t respond

3.      Have no hope

II. But God…4-9

A.    Powerful two words

B.     God did what only He could do

a.       Rich in mercy

b.      Because of his love for us

c.       Not by works

C.     If you are here this evening and a believer…

D.    So what…

a.       Our own salvation

III. For Good Works

A.    Understanding Grace

a.       2 mistakes

                                                                          i.      Salvation is by grace…after that it is up to me

1.      Mediocre commitment= not true understanding of v 1-9
