The Source of Power in Kingdom Work: Part 1
Acts 1:8; John 16:7 – 11
Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
John 16:7–11 NLT
7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
INTRODUCTION:
A- The work of the kingdom:
1- the proclamation of the good news of Christ with the purpose of bringing other people into Christ’s kingdom.
Acts 1:8
Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Mark 16:15
Mark 16:15 NLT
15 And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.
2- the perpetual creation of disciples that obey the teachings of Christ.
Matthew 28:18 – 20
Matthew 28:18–20 NLT
18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
T. S.: The one major problem facing you and I is that the task given to us by Christ is impossible for us to accomplish in our own strength and power.

I- THE NEED FOR POWER (Acts 1:8)

Acts 1:8 NLT
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
A- Jesus promised another source of power.
1- That power source is not of human origin.
2- That power source is sent by Christ himself.
B- Jesus promised to send power to enable us to carry out his work.
1- Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit – the 3rd person of the triune Godhead. (John 16:7)
John 16:7 NLT
7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.
2- While we are charged with the task of bearing witness to the gospel of Christ, it is not our job to coerce people to accept it.
3- Taking the message of Christ to all of the world is a task of tremendous magnitude.
4- The Lord also told us that we are to make disciples among all nations and people groups.
5- Making disciples among all the nations and people groups is beyond our power to accomplish.
6- If we are to accomplish this task we need power that is beyond our own.

II- THE SOURCE OF POWER (John 16:7 – 11)

John 16:7–11 NLT
7 But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. 9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. 10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. 11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.

A- The Holy Spirit has a specific task that infuses our witness with power.

1- The Holy Spirit “convicts” or “convinces”.
a- In the original language, this term comes from judicial law. It speaks of summing up the evidence and thereby convincing someone of truth. Hence, this translation uses the term advocate for the role of the Holy Spirit. An advocate is an attorney.
b- As witnesses, you and I opened the case considering the need of the person being witness to the fact that Christ is the answer to that need.
c- It is the Holy Spirit – and he alone – who is charged with the task of convincing that person that the witness is telling the truth.
d- There are 3 specific things that the Holy Spirit convicts the lost person of as we witness to them:
B- The Holy Spirit deals with 3 specific things:
(John 16:8)
John 16:8 NLT
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
1- The Holy Spirit convicts the lost person of sin.
a- Specifically, he convicts a person of the sin of unbelief. (John 16:9)
John 16:9 NLT
9 The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
b- Apart from this work of conviction, it is impossible for the person to be saved.
(John 6:44)
John 6:44 NLT
44 For no one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them to me, and at the last day I will raise them up.
2- The Holy Spirit convicts of righteousness.
(John 16:10)
John 16:10 NLT
10 Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more.
a- while Jesus was on the earth, he taught people the way of righteousness.
b- The Holy Spirit convicts lost person that the gospel message is true.
Even the Roman official named Felix heard the gospel message and reacted to the truth he heard.
(Acts 24:25)
Acts 24:25 NLT
25 As he reasoned with them about righteousness and self-control and the coming day of judgment, Felix became frightened. “Go away for now,” he replied. “When it is more convenient, I’ll call for you again.”
3- The Holy Spirit convicts the lost person of judgment to come.
(John 16:11)
John 16:11 NLT
11 Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.
a- the Holy Spirit helps the individual to understand that Satan is already under God’s judgment and will one day experience is dreadful sentence. (Revelation 20:10)
Revelation 20:10 NLT
10 Then the devil, who had deceived them, was thrown into the fiery lake of burning sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
b- the Holy Spirit helps the individual to understand that he too will be judged and sentenced for his rebellion. (Revelation 20:11 – 15)
Revelation 20:11–15 NLT
11 And I saw a great white throne and the one sitting on it. The earth and sky fled from his presence, but they found no place to hide. 12 I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up its dead, and death and the grave gave up their dead. And all were judged according to their deeds. 14 Then death and the grave were thrown into the lake of fire. This lake of fire is the second death. 15 And anyone whose name was not found recorded in the Book of Life was thrown into the lake of fire.
c- the Holy Spirit helps the lost person to understand what Jesus did for him on the cross. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
2 Corinthians 5:21 NLT
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
