1 Samuel 26:1–2 ESV
1 Then the Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding himself on the hill of Hachilah, which is on the east of Jeshimon?” 2 So Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph with three thousand chosen men of Israel to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
What’s up with Ziph?
What’s up with Saul?
1 Samuel 26:3–5 ESV
3 And Saul encamped on the hill of Hachilah, which is beside the road on the east of Jeshimon. But David remained in the wilderness. When he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness, 4 David sent out spies and learned that Saul had indeed come. 5 Then David rose and came to the place where Saul had encamped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, with Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army. Saul was lying within the encampment, while the army was encamped around him.
Wilderness - testing ground for Gods people…
Spies
Bullseye - Saul in the center
The deception of false security…
1 Samuel 26:6–8 ESV
6 Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Joab’s brother Abishai the son of Zeruiah, “Who will go down with me into the camp to Saul?” And Abishai said, “I will go down with you.” 7 So David and Abishai went to the army by night. And there lay Saul sleeping within the encampment, with his spear stuck in the ground at his head, and Abner and the army lay around him. 8 Then Abishai said to David, “God has given your enemy into your hand this day. Now please let me pin him to the earth with one stroke of the spear, and I will not strike him twice.”
Who’s with me…?
This is what Jesus is asking you!… Who will come with him into the camp of the enemy!
Abishai = here I am lord send me!
Saul’s Spear…
Abishai - one and done ! this is it ! Let Me !
LOL great “plan” Abishai!!
1 Samuel 26:9–11 ESV
9 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can put out his hand against the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless?” 10 And David said, “As the Lord lives, the Lord will strike him, or his day will come to die, or he will go down into battle and perish. 11 The Lord forbid that I should put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. But take now the spear that is at his head and the jar of water, and let us go.”
Guilt of the blood of the Lords anointed is on your hands!
Spear - not used on the king = would be used on the KING!
jar of water -
1 Samuel 26:12 ESV
12 So David took the spear and the jar of water from Saul’s head, and they went away. No man saw it or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them.
The LORD - made them sleep!!
a table before me in the presence of my enemies!!
surrounded on every side yet without fear!!
David could not have known this!!!
1 Samuel 26:13–16 ESV
13 Then David went over to the other side and stood far off on the top of the hill, with a great space between them. 14 And David called to the army, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, “Will you not answer, Abner?” Then Abner answered, “Who are you who calls to the king?” 15 And David said to Abner, “Are you not a man? Who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not kept watch over your lord the king? For one of the people came in to destroy the king your lord. 16 This thing that you have done is not good. As the Lord lives, you deserve to die, because you have not kept watch over your lord, the Lord’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is and the jar of water that was at his head.”
Nice Echo - Abner… Abner!
what kind of man are you…!? = ouch!
slack in his duties - where is the watchman?
MEN… Where is the watchman!?
1 Samuel 26:17–20 ESV
17 Saul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.” 18 And he said, “Why does my lord pursue after his servant? For what have I done? What evil is on my hands? 19 Now therefore let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is the Lord who has stirred you up against me, may he accept an offering, but if it is men, may they be cursed before the Lord, for they have driven me out this day that I should have no share in the heritage of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’ 20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth away from the presence of the Lord, for the king of Israel has come out to seek a single flea like one who hunts a partridge in the mountains.”
Listen to interaction...
son, lord, king
why are you after me?
If God I would ask for forgiveness if man he will be cursed and here is why… V19c

Partridge - tireless pursuit until beaten with a club… no defense
1 Samuel 26:21 ESV
21 Then Saul said, “I have sinned. Return, my son David, for I will no more do you harm, because my life was precious in your eyes this day. Behold, I have acted foolishly, and have made a great mistake.”
Saul Says:
I have sinned
Return my son
I have acted foolishly
Great Mistake… sin is SIN not MISTAKES!!!
There’s no fool like an old fool
This might be a little “Bitter Sweet” but “The Main Ingredient” of what I’m trying to tell you is this...
Everybody plays the fool… sometimes There's no exception to the rule Listen, to me, it may be factual, may be cruel But I’m not lying to ya, everybody plays the fool
How Saul Played The Fool
He failed to await God’s appointed time 1 Sam 13.8-15 = 7 days for Samuel
He disobeyed the LORD’s command to destroy Amalek 1 Sam 15.1-22 he sacrificed instead
He became exceedingly jealous over both David and Samuel
He continued to go out after the LORDs anointed
He sought counsel from a witch 1 Sam 28
He commits suicide in battle
How Do We Play The Fool?
We say there is no God Ps 14.1 or at least in our hearts say this...
We scoff and mock at sin Pro 14.9 we consider sin lightly, natural fruit of evolution
We trust in our own minds and thoughts rather then the word Pro 28.26
We substitute excuses for faith and obedience in Christ
We trust in our own strength, power, and security
1 Samuel 26:22–25 ESV
22 And David answered and said, “Here is the spear, O king! Let one of the young men come over and take it. 23 The Lord rewards every man for his righteousness and his faithfulness, for the Lord gave you into my hand today, and I would not put out my hand against the Lord’s anointed. 24 Behold, as your life was precious this day in my sight, so may my life be precious in the sight of the Lord, and may he deliver me out of all tribulation.” 25 Then Saul said to David, “Blessed be you, my son David! You will do many things and will succeed in them.” So David went his way, and Saul returned to his place.
David:
Here is your stuff send someone to get it my reward is from God!
I spared you, I will trust God to deliver Me!

CONCLUSION: The wise man is he who receives the Lord Jesus Christ into his heart and acquaints himself with the Lord by reading and doing His Word.
Where do you need to repent from playing the fool and ask Jesus to show you how to wisely choose obedience?
Prayer
God our Father You have told us in your Word:
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
You have told us
Proverbs 4:7 ESV
7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.
again You have told us
Proverbs 9:10 ESV
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
And again You have told us
Psalm 111:10 ESV
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever!
We admit that we so often think, act, speak, behave, and even believe foolishly. We long to be like David and not Saul. Our hearts cry out for you for You are Good and Your ways are Right! The Spirit within us yearns to cast off foolishness and live lives of faithful obedience to you, live lives characterized by Your wisdom. Therefore we cling to Your promises like You have given to us in James that says:
James 1:5 ESV
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
So we boldly approach your throne through Christ asking for you to give to us what we in ourselves would otherwise lack. For your Glory and in the name of Jesus we pray… AMEN!
Proverbs 2:3–6 ESV
3 yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding;
