First of all, what does it mean to worship?
First of all, what does it mean to worship?
Most of the time when people think of the word “worship” they think of singing. That is probably a mistake of the modern day church, because why a lot of us think this way is because of the title that we have given people like me. I am the worship Pastor… What is it that people see me do the most? Leading music on Sunday morning. So this is where we tend to go when we think of worship, “well it must be what we do when that guy up on the stage leads us in singing because he is the worship leader”. Fair enough. But this morning I will attempt to show you what the word “worship” means to the Christ followers that make up “the church” in the context of the holy scriptures… WOULD YOU PRAY WITH ME?

What is Biblical Worship?

Here is a good basic definition of worship that we will use today as we examine a couple passages.
Biblical Worship: The outward expression of an inward estimation of God
Now, any definition of worship can be dangerous because it is ultimately based on how we estimate God. A couple of things go into that word “estimate”
Estimation requires knowledge
everything that must go into our estimation of God must be from scripture. This is our source of wisdom and it is our source of God’s attributes. Worship of God cannot be estimated off of an emotional scale (how do i feel about God today), but must be estimated based on truth.
Estimation requires value
How do you see God? Of what value is he to you? When you can answer these questions you can provide a greater description of your estimation of God. Of what priority to you find him?

Everyone is a worshipper

Before we continue we must see that we all are worshippers. How do we know this? Well, if you haven’t read exodus lately you can simply look at your life. We can take “God” out of the end of that definition and replace it with anything. It then is not biblical worship, but just worship in general Like this…
Worship: the outward expression of an inward estimation of The Reds (UC Basketball… Family… My Job… Money)
You see, the idea for the christian is to kill the worship of everything else… and leave standing only the worship of God.
