I feel as if we have spent the past two months preparing for today. In my opinion, should be called the “oomph” chapter.
is the fullback blocking and preparing the clean path for , the running back.
In , Jesus gives the 12 disciples their marching orders that they would need to serve Him for the rest of their lives.
He taught His disciples by example in and by sending them into the field in .
As believers today, we often find ourselves enjoying the Christian life as spectators but find trouble with being participants. Jesus has a plan for every one of us in the room to be more than people who watch Him work. He is calling us to join the work according to His purpose and the gifts that we all have.
We are a commissioned people.
In other words, Jesus has sent us into His mission field.
What are we sent as?
Representatives of the kingdom of God.

1. We Have Power & Authority in This World. (v. 1-2)

Jesus had shown the disciples His authority over weather, demons, illness, and death. He worked these miracles so that the disciples would know that He was more than a man.
Messiah - The anointed king through whom God establishes his rule over the world.
Jesus was not simply satisfied in doing all of the ministry Himself. He had a much bigger plan and purpose in this scenario.
He would build His church on top of the disciples. He would send them to villages, towns, and cities to share the good news of the gospel while exercising demons and healing sickness.
Power - The power and ability to do anything.
Authority - Freedom permitted by peace. License give to leaders in the Jewish Law.
Sent - Off or away from.
Jesus did not send His disciples into the world with nothing. He supplied His followers with the same power and authority that He has.
We often assume that we cannot serve Jesus because of our limits or weaknesses.
Think of the 12 men that Jesus sent out. Several were fisherman, one was a tax collector, another started an uprising, and the others had a major past. None of these men felt ready.
Jesus is not asking you to measure up to a certain standard of intelligence or confidence to serve Him.
The abilities He will give you are beyond anything you currently have. He wants to supply you with power and authority from Heaven.
You represent a kingdom that will never be defeated. He is SENDING you to serve Him in places that He could go without but instead He is including you in His purpose.
Do you know what you have when you walk into a room?

2. Our Power is Beyond Our Own Ability. (v. 3-6)

Jesus proceed to give the disciples the strangest advice that He could have given them.
He told them to take absolutely nothing with them on the journey. There was no mission trip planning or list of what to bring.
He told them to take no weapons to protect themselves, suitcase, food, money or clothes.
“Anyone who shows you hospitality because of me is who you will stay with. Don’t go anywhere else until it is time to leave that place.”
If they didn’t welcome them, they were to “shake the dust off their feat and leave”.
This was the custom that Jewish people would use toward other nations. When coming back from Palestine, it was customary for a Jewish person to clean their feet because of their disdain for nonJews.
We read that the disciples were obedient and did what the Lord told them to do.

Why would Jesus send the disciples with nothing on their mission?
Why would Jesus send the disciples with nothing on their mission?
He wanted the disciples fully dependent on Him. - When we depend on ourselves, we won’t be in the position to put ourselves out there in faith. When Jesus is our everything, there is no room for the world to step in.
The disciples couldn’t make an impact using their own abilities. - If the disciples would have taken any of their own provisions, they might be tempted turn to their own abilities or talents to make an impact.
He would meet their needs for them. - In , Jesus said to them, “When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything? ‘Not a thing,’ they said.” Even though Jesus sent the disciples with nothing, they never went without.
Jesus will put us in positions of faith so that we can understand that He will meet our needs and give us the tools to serve Him to be fully used by Him.
There is nothing to add. Nothing to impress. He has the tools. You just need what He has to provide.

3. God’s Power Brings Recognition. (v. 7-9)

Obviously, the ministry through the disciples worked!
Word of mouth is the only way that Herod could have known that the ministry of Jesus had now reached the area.
Herod Antipus, the son of Herod the Great when Jesus was born had a history with John the Baptist.
John had called out Herod for marrying his brothers wife. Herod had John imprisoned and eventually sent John the Baptist to be beheaded.
The community thought that John had come back from the dead or even Elijah the prophet of old had risen. Some people thought one of the prophets from the Old Testament had come.
Herod’s father had wanted to kill Jesus and now the son was wanting to meet Jesus out of fear of losing power.
When the Holy Spirit moves in the church, it’s easy to get uncomfortable.
What I mean is this: When God uses humans as His vessels, people who have a problem with Jesus will take it out on His people.
The power of God works y’all.
Nonbelievers will ask questions and try to figure out why things are changing around them.
Do you believe that society will change when the church fulfills its calling?
