Introduction

When our kids were little we would try to help them to understand the importance of Easter. So we would tell them,
“ Jesus died and rose again so we can go to heaven.”
It’s a great practice to explain things to a child. If you want to get the message across and be understood, you will be challenged to focus on the importance points. Of course this will force you to think through it critically.
If we are being honest, we adults are not that different from children. We like simple. However, as the apostle Paul tells us, we need to get to a point where we move away from “spiritual milk” and begin to understand the deeper truths of scripture. That’s what this next series is about.
We are going to look at The Gift of Atonement. More specifically, we are going to look at all the Christ accomplished for us in relation to our atonement.

What is atonement?

The atonement is the work Christ did in his life and death to earn our salvation.

This is great view of atonement that focuses in the work of Christ.
But, you know, atonement also has deep roots into the Mosaic times.
Stand with me as we read where atonement began for God’s people.

Leviticus 16:29-34

The Day of Atonement

Leviticus 16:29 ESV
29 “And it shall be a statute to you forever that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves and shall do no work, either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you.
Afflict yourself - humble yourself
This is a day of Sabbath
God is marking this as a sacred day.
Leviticus 16:30 ESV
30 For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you. You shall be clean before the Lord from all your sins.
You can read about this process in Lev. 1-29

Atonement for the Holy Place & Tent of Meeting

verse 11-16
Kill the bull as sin offering for himself and for his house. (v11)
Take censor of coals from the fire of the Holy Place (v12-13)
This will cover (block) the view of the God that is over the mercy seat
So Aaron may not die.
Then Sprinkle blood on Mercy Seat (v14)
On east side & on the front
The Kill the goat of sin offering for the People (v15)
Leviticus 16:16 ESV
16 Thus he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleannesses of the people of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And so he shall do for the tent of meeting, which dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses.
Must make atonement for Holy Place & Tent of Meeting
Because of the sin of the People.

Atonement for the Alter

Take some of blood and bull and goat
Put it on the horns of the alter (v18)
Leviticus 16:19 ESV
19 And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel.
Consecrate it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel.
Leviticus 16:20 ESV
20 “And when he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat.
Whole process so far is to take all the sins from Aaron, his house, the People, the Holy Place, Tent of Meeting, & the Alter
Place all the sin onto a scape-goat
Then come back and offer the burnt offering.

Two Important Points we learn from the Process of Atonement

Sin is pervasive.
Atonement is serious.
Of course Atonement is serious
why point that out.
Leviticus 10:1 ESV
1 Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it and laid incense on it and offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them.
Leviticus 10:2 ESV
2 And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.
Was the offense due to:
ignorance
presumption
self promotion?
we get a hint in the next verse...
Leviticus 10:3 ESV
3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said: ‘Among those who are near me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.’ ” And Aaron held his peace.

Among those who are near me

I will be sanctified
hallowed
sacred
unprofane

Before all the people

I will be glorified
Rehearsing His attributes and deeds
holiness
faithfulness
mercy
power
ect....
A third important point we learn from process of atonement.

3. Atonement is a gift

2 Peter 2:4 ESV
4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;
2 Peter 2:9 ESV
9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

If Atonement is so important, why don’t we see it today?

Hebrews 9:11–12 ESV
11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
Jesus is the High Priest
He entered once and for all
Not by blood and goats
Securing Eternal Redemption
The coming weeks we are going to see images of the New Testament writers gave.
Paint a complete picture of Christ as our perfect Atonement.
