Romans 8:1 NKJV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:1–2 NKJV
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

Background

is a “therefore”
it is a conclusion to the preceding arguments of - the Christian’s strrugle between the law of Gd and the law of sin
presents a life that is unlike any other life
a life without condemnation
a life that not found in the world
Definition: Condemnation
Condemn (grk. KATAKRINO) - to pronounce guilt and a punitive sentence on someone
Condemnation is the opposite of justification. But Paul treats them separately.
But Paul treats them separately
a justified person is free from condemnation in the eyes of God
a life free from condemnation goes beyond being justified before God. Justification is just the beginning.

A Life of Condemnation

Condemn - to pronounce guilt and a punitive sentence on someone
Condemnation is the opposite of justification.

To be condemned means

to be appointed to destruction
to be deserving of death
to be condemned with the world
the world is already condemned for destruction

To be condemned is to live a miserable life

1 John 3:20 NKJV
20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.
it is like living illegally in a country where you have no visa - TNT
it is like living illegally in a country where you have no visa - TNT
it is like living a fugitive - running away from the law
it is like living on “death row” - everyday you know you are day closer to judgment day
Imagine Israel in the wilderness -
God condemned them to 40 years of wilderness journey until every rebel is dead.

To be “uncondemned” is the most blessed life!

1 John 3:21 NKJV
21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.
there is no law that says you’re guilty
there is no other person around you that says you’re guilty
there is nothing in your heart that says you’re guilty
Imagine how Joshua and Caleb felt all those 40 years!
God has declared that they will go into the Promised Land
- in the second counting forty years later, only Joshua and Caleb were alive fromt he first counting
- they have wholly followed the Lord

To be free from condemnation means you are free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:2 NKJV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.

Guilty or Not Guilty - How do I know?

Give it a “word test”

the Scripture is the clearest guideline we have from God

Give it a “heart test”

1 John 3:20–21 NKJV
20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.
we know the heart is most deceitful
it can make us think more than we should think of ourself
BUT it cannot deny when we are guilty og something
the “hiding” says that we are indeed guilty of something
If my own heart condemns me, how can I stand before God Himself?
My heart condemns me when -
I cannot speak my thoughts - because I think they are wrong
negative thoughts against another person
I cannot share my actions in public, esp. among Christians
movies that I watch
amusements that I play
places that I go
expenditures that I do

Where Condemnation Ends

When a person is IN CHRIST, AND WALKS ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT OF GOD, NOT ACCORDING TO THE FLESH.
In Christ - means in Christ today
Walking according to the Spirit

To be “in Christ” is -----

To be identified in Christ’s death
Romans 8:3–4 NKJV
3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Romans 8:2–4 NKJV
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
To have Christ in me!
I am His and He is mine
Romans 8:9 NKJV
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

To walk according to the Spirit is -----

Romans 8.9
To live according to the Spirit
Romans 8:5 NKJV
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
To be mindful of the things of the Spirit
Romans 8:6–8 NKJV
6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8.6-7
To be quickened by the Spirit in the mortal body
Romans 8:10–11 NKJV
10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8.10-11

Conclusion

To “live according to the Spirit of God” IS the ‘secret” or “key” to a life free frm condemnation.
Galatians 5:16–18 NKJV
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
To live according to the Spirit is our moral obligation to God - a debt.
Romans 8:12–14 NKJV
12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
Romans 8.12-
Why is it a moral obligation?
A life free from condemnation is a debt
because Jesus Christ has paid the price of our sin with His own blood
because He has given us His Holy Spirit when we believed
What if i don’t or I won’t?
you will grieve the Holy Spirit
you will “die”
