Psalm 23

This section of Scripture is right up there with John 3:16 as being one of the most famous passages in the whole Bible. It often featured at funerals.

In our country we do not realize the intimacy of a shepherd with his flock as they do in Syria and in parts of Southern Europe. It was my daily delight every day for many weeks and a dozen times a day, to watch a shepherd who had this almost incredibly close communion with his flock. Many times have I accompanied him through the green pastures and by the stream. If my shepherd wished to lead his sheep from one pasture to another, he went before them, and he was usually singing.

He led them with a song or with a sweet, low, wooing whistle like the call of a bird, and the sheep raised their heads from the herbage, looked at their guardian and guide, and followed on. I have heard his song and his low birdcall by the watercourse, and have seen the sheep follow his course over the rocky boulders to the still waters, where they have been refreshed. At noon he would sit down in a place of shadows, and all his flock crowded around him for rest. At night, when the darkness was falling, he gathered them into the fold.

We must realize an intimacy like this if we wish to understand the shepherd imagery of the Old Book. The communion is so intimate that the shepherd knows if one of his sheep is missing.

Psalm 23 ESV
A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
This a Psalm written by David, and reflects God’s relationship with David and Davids with God, and through this relationship with God David has this amazing three part testimony:
I have what I need
I fear no evil (no danger)
I will dwell (Future hope)
David begins by say “The Lord is my Shepherd; I have what I need.” It is because of the Lord (YHWH- the promise keeping God) being a good Shepherd, that David is able to have this testimony.
David compared God’s love, protection, and guidance for His people to that provided by a shepherd for his sheep.
This is the Beginning- It is because Lord I have what I need.

I have What I need

Psalm 23:1-3 majors on three experiences that show “I have what I need”
Green Pasture points to have plenty. Needs are being met because the Good shepherd guides and leads the sheep to what they need
there is peace because He leads besides quiet waters- a sense of peace of every sort-
Renewal- God restores my Soul.
All of these take place because God leads not down just any path, but He leads down the right paths, or the paths of righteousness
God provides for His people:
Philippians 4:19 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
This First Testimony that David address “I have what I need” is a statement that is made based on faith- Not only do I trust God with my salvation and eternity but I trust God with everything in my life.
This is one of the hardest for all believers because we doubt- “What if God doesn’t come through?” Or “Maybe God truly doesn’t know what is best for me.”
Eve when she was tempted in the garden was tempted with the thought that God didn’t truly have what was best for her and He was withholding from her.
Genesis 3:4–5 ESV
But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
This is the great temptation we all face- yet in God we have all that we need- All through out the Bible this is the a theme- and it is also in our very owe lives; Will we trust God, and in return act in obedience, cause ultimately the way we live our lives show if we truly have faith in God
Eve knew God, even quoted His very words, yet her action showed her heart.
David says that God, the Good Shepherd, leads Him, meaning He follows where God leads, and this is how he has plenty, rest/peace, and renewal.
Trusting God and following God go hand in hand. When speaking of faith being proven by actions James writes
James 2:14–20 ESV
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
One-thing we must remember is that just because we have faith in God and follow Him doesn’t mean we are perfect- David messed up, Mosses messed up, Abraham messed up. But because we have faith in God we continue to rely on His grace, we continue to follow Him, and even in the darkest times we continue to put our faith in Him.

I will fear no evil

300 Illustrations for Preachers Burning His House down to Kill a Spider

A man afraid of spiders spotted one in the laundry room of his West Seattle home. In order to get rid of it, he grabbed a lighter and a can of spray paint. There is no report about the fate of the spider, but the house caught fire, causing about $60,000 worth of damage. That is a lot to get rid of one spider.

Fear can make us act irrationally. We have fears that keep us from effectively serving the Lord, and the messes these fears get us into are often worse than what we were afraid of in the first place. “Fear not,” God says. “I am with you.”

Once again this takes faith- fearing no evil is built on knowing that God is a good shepherd and the shepherd protects His flock.
Psalm 46:1–3 ESV
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
Fearing no evil takes running to God when everything else is caving in. When your world is falling apart, when evil things are happening all around you, God is still faithful, God has not abandoned you, God is still the Good Shepherd; He hasn’t changed- But will you trust Him. Will you put your life into His hands, and trust the plans that He has, the paths that He leads you down.

I will Dwell

David’s hope wasn’t just in this life, but His faith was in the God who has, was, and is. Our faith is something that leads us into eternity. God promise for those who trust and follow Him is that they will dwell with Him in eternity, where there is no more pain, sorrow, or even the temptation to do wrong.
There is no more evil it is gone. All this is because God is the Good Shepherd who leads, protects and provides for His people (His flock), that ultimate provision being the cross- Our greatest needs He has provided for.
John 10:11 ESV
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He laid down His life to save us who believe in Him, and it because of this that we have this eternal security- God will led us to dwell with Him.
300 Illustrations for Preachers Hoping for Resurrection through Cryonics

Alan Sinclair does not want his death to be permanent. After he dies, his blood will be flushed from his body and replaced with antifreeze. Technicians will then cool the body with dry ice and fly it to a cryonics center in Michigan. The center will keep it at minus 320 degrees. When a solution is found for whatever kills him, future technicians will thaw him out. Cured Alan will exist on earth once more. His wife has already died and undergone the cryonics solution.

The Christian hope is that God will resurrect us from the dead, just as our Lord Jesus resurrected. In the newly resurrected state, we will need no cure because the main cause of death—sin—will have already been taken care of.

The Good Shepherd has come and led the way for us to follow and it is because of this that we have a blessed hope- we too will be resurrected to a new life.

Salvation, Assurance of

Several years ago one of the astronauts who walked on the moon was interviewed and asked, “What do you think about as you stood on the moon and looked back at the earth?” The astronaut replied, “I remembered how the spacecraft was built by the lowest bidder.”

We as Christians can rejoice that the work of salvation did not go to the “lowest bidder” but was performed by an infinite God. There will never be a deficiency in his work. Our salvation is as sure as the architect of that salvation, Almighty God.

When the storms of life, the winds of trouble, and the sea of discomfort and emotional agony seem to overwhelm, we have to say with the songwriter, “Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. . . . We dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.”

This is the great truth “Even though i walk through the valley of the Shadow of death, I will fear not evil” not because of who I am, But because of God being the good shepherd who walks ahead of me leading me.
