Characteristics of a good lover

Friend from seminary (betrayal)
I understand what its like to be betrayed
Jesus on the night he was betrayed gave us the Lord’s Supper
Perhaps you have feel betrayed by others in your life right now
Betrayal comes in specifically stated ways and in mutual expectations.
Betrayal happens in the midst of success
Success
Betrayal is the opposite of everything we want in a relationship
Ever been ghosted?
Luke 22:59–62 CSB
59 About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with him, since he’s also a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Peter was just doing what comes natural, saving his own skin.
Sometimes just ditching, is a sign of betrayal
But success isn’t natural
Remember what our way to success is

success = surrender to God X showing up

Betrayal destroys success

Betrayal is self-centeredness * neglect or abandonment

Cheater - self-centered, trying to get their own needs met
Or neglecting a relationship, not valuing the relationship
Two remarkable things about Jesus.

Jesus never betrays anyone

Jesus knows how to handle being betrayed

How do we not betray Jesus and How do we overcome the betrayal in our own lives?
Jesus tells us to fight to the end, to sustain
He states what is expected of him
He has the difficult conversations to state expectations
Once betrayed
Jesus doesn’t base his treatment of others on the actions of others, he’s not trying to get people before they get him
John 3:16–18 CSB
16 For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.
Jesus from before the beginning of time was working to make a way for betrayers to be in right relationship with Him.
Also because God doesn’t determine His actions based on our actions, God is love. He can allow for punishment.
Anyone who does not believe is already condemned.
God is not an it’s ok kind of
God doesn’t have to change, instead the one condemned is able to be forgiven because God will not give in, will not accept betrayal
I have been betrayed and I know that when I was betrayed I didn’t want
Yet, stands with open arms as we turn back to Him.
1 John 1:9–2:2 CEV
9 But if we confess our sins to God, he can always be trusted to forgive us and take our sins away. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make God a liar, and his message isn’t in our hearts. 1 My children, I am writing this so that you won’t sin. But if you do sin, Jesus Christ always does the right thing, and he will speak to the Father for us. 2 Christ is the sacrifice that takes away our sins and the sins of all the world’s people.
Once betrayed I dedicated my life to doing the right thing
I
Think about that world of guilt you carry with you.
Jesus welcomes you back
Jesus offers forgiveness first and reconciles with those who desire to be forgiven
The cross
Jesus doesn’t just let the failures slide.
questions Peter
No statements about Judas, Judas killed himself
Jesus made his way to Peter, asked him three times and restored him

Jesus makes possible restoration for the betrayer.

Jesus only accepts a betrayer that surrenders

1 John 2:3–6 CEV
3 When we obey God, we are sure that we know him. 4 But if we claim to know him and don’t obey him, we are lying and the truth isn’t in our hearts. 5 We truly love God only when we obey him as we should, and then we know that we belong to him. 6 If we say we are his, we must follow the example of Christ.
A betrayer doesn’t show up. A betrayer doesn’t help. A betrayer takes care of themself. A betrayer looks out most to survive being betrayed.
Jesus gets betrayed, and then shows up. God loves us so much that He came himself to die on the cross for us. Jesus looked out to bring God’s glory.
We have betrayed. We need to surrender to Christ. We need to do what God is calling us to do to bring His glory!
We will be betrayed. We will have opportunity to make a way for betrayers to be made right. We will allow those who repent to become something new.
God and I are all about making people new.
Are you? Or just a betrayer looking out for your own interests?
