Matthew 5:43–48 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Where did they get this??
Leviticus 19:18 ESV
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
This is actually part of Jesus’ answer to what is the greatest commandment:
Matthew 22:34–36 ESV
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
Matthew 22:37–40 ESV
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Just like everything in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus brings authoritative correction to the Pharisees bad teaching.

Taken out because the Pharisees were extremely selfish and self-loving.
“Hate your enemy”
This was completely added...
Any non-jew, was non-neighbor.
Tax collectors, sinners, and common people
John 7:45–49 ESV
The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” The Pharisees answered them, “Have you also been deceived? Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed.”

“Neighbor”
Who is my neighbor?
Luke 10:30–37 ESV
Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
The basis of who we think is our neighbor is actually rooted in our identity and not our neighbor’s.
Look back at the original text in Leviticus 19.
Leviticus 19:18 ESV
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
A few versus down...
Leviticus 19:33–34 ESV
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
A blessing to the nations since the beginning...
Genesis 12:1–3 ESV
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

But I say...

The “I” was not necessary in the Greek language, and it’s use in all these cases adds emphasis, grammatical and theological significance.
Jesus’ words are greater than the rabbinic tradition and equal in authority to scripture.

I say this on my own authority which is equal to and consistent with divine truth, you shall love your enemies..

Love your enemies...

Our tendency is to love things that are lovable,
and the extent of that love tends to be directly proportionate to the lovability of the object.

Gods love is not rooted in the object, but on his own character.
The type of love described here is agape,
Agape may involve emotion, but must involve action.

Pray for those who persecute you...

What is the heart of that prayer? Love, and the heart of love is reconciliation with God. There is nothing more loving that being reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:17–19 ESV
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor who suffered and was ultimately killed in Nazi Germany said,
“This is the supreme demand. Through the medium of prayer we go to our enemy, stand by his side, and plead for him to God.”
We are called to intercede for our enemies in prayer the same way Jesus intercedes for us.

Closing thoughts:
So that you may be sons...
Our love for others doesn’t make us sons, but proves our sonship… (John 13, and 1 John 4)
People understand when something isn’t right, when we talk about the love of our God it ought to transform us!
For he makes the sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust
This is actually a testimony to God’s graciousness to his creation.
If God did not extend grace to his creation NONE could stand.

You must be perfect...
This is the central theme of the entire sermon
Drop the gospel...
The only way you can hate your enemy is to lack an understanding that you were once an enemy of God.
Jesus’ love
John 13:34 ESV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
Sacrificial and servant-oriented
Romans 5:6–8 ESV
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Loving your enemies comes at a great cost
