Sermon Notes for Philippians 2:9-11

Paul could have stopped at verse 8        BUT

9  For this reason also, Therefore in NIV

          What reason?          His obedience

Heb12:2  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

The source of His exaltation

God highly exalted (5251) Him,

He was exalted high          exalted in a most magnificent way.

1) metaph. to exalt to the highest rank and power, raise to supreme majesty

2) to extol most highly

3) to be lifted up with pride, exalted beyond measure

4 steps upward

• Resurrection

• Ascension

Jesus did not return the way he came from Heaven. He is now the God/Man. When He ascended He did so as a physical being.

• Coronation

Acts 5:30  The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead— whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. 31  God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. 32  We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."

Cats 7:55  But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56  "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."

Heb.2:9  But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Rev5:11  Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12  In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!"

• Intersession

As high priest    Rom 8:34 Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died— more than that, who was raised to life— is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Heb7:25  Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. 26 Such a high priest meets our need— one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27  Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28  For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.

The title of his exaltation

and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,

The father conferred upon the son the name which is above every name with the most divinely perfect love.

The Father was completely satisfied in Christ

Heb1:1  God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2  in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. 3  And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

    4 ¶  having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

The name is not revealed until verse 11

The name was given Him to emphasise his rank above all other beings.

It reflects not only His divine essence and nature but also the new and unique privileges that the Father gave Him in response to His redemptive work.

every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

Lord is the title of majesty, authority, honour, and sovereignty.

This name will be expanded to King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Rev9: 16  And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

The Hebrew word for God (Jehovah) in the Old Testament is translated in the Greek (Kyrios) then in the English Lord.

Is42:8  "I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols.

Is45: 22  "Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other. 23  "I have sworn by Myself, The word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance. 24  "They will say of Me, ‘Only in the LORD are righteousness and strength.’ Men will come to Him, And all who were angry at Him will be put to shame. 25  "In the LORD all the offspring of Israel Will be justified and will glory."

Jesus is given the same name as that of Jehovah God. The Father has restored His glory just as Jesus prayed.

Again a reference to the deity of Christ

Do we fully understand that our Lord is truly awesome?

Do we fully understand the worship that is due to Him?

The Response to His exaltation

10  so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11  and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Rev1: 12  Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; 13  and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. 14  His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. 15  His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. 16  In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength. 17  When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, 18  and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.

There are some who will fall in worship because they are His

There are some who will fall on their knees not because they want to but that the glory will overwhelm them

Is45:24b And all who were angry at Him will be put to shame.

At the day of the Lord those who refuse to bow the knee before this day will not have a second chance they are condemned to the place of destruction

Obedience and glorification
