God made a mighty promise to Abraham in the book of Genesis. He promised that through Abraham there will be many descendants that will form a nation and through that nation, the world would be blessed and transformed. In this promise so long ago, God put into motion His plan for blessing and transforming the world through the descendants of Abraham. From the outside observer, there were many seasons that appeared as though the promise of God had faltered, but each season was instrumental in revealing and fulfilling every aspect of God’s promise. God’s promise comes to its apex as Christ is given to fulfill the fulness of the promise.

The Promise of God

Hebrews 6:13-15
Hebrews 6:13–15 NIV
When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
In the person of Abraham, we see the prototype relationship between God and man. God chose Abraham from the rest of creation and he intentionally intervened in His life. He promised to lead and guide Abraham as he placed his trust in the Lord.
Genesis 22:
Genesis 22:13–18 NIV
Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”
There are two distinct kinds of covenants that the Lord makes with mankind, unconditional and conditional. The conditional covenants required man’s faithfulness and obedience to determine God’s involvement and promise. This is the kind of covenant made with the people of Israel and Moses as the Lord.
The other kind of covenant was unconditional covenant. This covenant is one sided.

The Authority of the Promise

Hebrews 6:16–18 NIV
People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.
Hebrews 6:

Our Hope and Anchor

Hebrews 6:18–20 NIV
God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
