The Work of the Holy Spirit

Intro:
Last week in we considered these
Three questions:
Who is the Holy Spirit?
What is His work amidst the World?
What is His work among believers?
Who He is, He is God, the third person of the trinity
In the world, what He does, He convicts those in the world & He restrains the work of Satan
In the church, believers and followers of God the Son, His ‘works’ are many
· In the church, believers and followers of God the Son, His ‘works’ are many
I enumerated many of them:
He is our Helper (; )
He indwells/seals us (; ; ; , )
He guides, leads and tells us things ()
He guards and guarantees our salvation (; )
He aids in our prayers ()
He regenerates/renews us ()
He baptizes us into Christ ()
He comforts us (; )
He fills with joy and peace ()
He sanctifies us. ()
· He sanctifies us. ()
He gives us wisdom ()
He gives power and gifts (; ; )
Our text today is , and will act as a platform to dive into some other portions of Scripture to help us in our understanding of His work amidst believers individually and collectively in congregational settings…
John 16:13–14 NKJV
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

When He, the Spirit of truth, has come…
In
John 14:16–17 NKJV
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
-, Jesus said, “16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.”

He was already “with them”…
At this point, in the ‘upper room discourse’ (the last Passover meal, the washing the disciples feet, the walk toward the Brook Kidron), John chapter 13-17, the Spirit has dwelt ‘with’ them and they ‘knew’ Him (both personally and experientially – some of the previously enumerated ‘works’ – guiding, leading, conviction, revealing, renewing, wisdom, understanding, comfort, joy, peace…etc)
So in , when Jesus says, “When He has come”… The ‘coming’ Jesus refers to is ‘different’ that how He is there now…
After Jesus’ resurrection, in
John 20:19–23 NKJV
19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
, the Bible tells us, “19 Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. It is at this point that the fulfillment of Jesus’ previous statements recorded for us in and , namely, “He will be in you” and “When He has come…”
Finally, before Jesus’ ascension He instructed the disciples in
Luke 24:49 NKJV
49 “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”
, "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."
, "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."
Acts 1:1–8 NKJV
1 The former account I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 until the day in which He was taken up, after He through the Holy Spirit had given commandments to the apostles whom He had chosen, 3 to whom He also presented Himself alive after His suffering by many infallible proofs, being seen by them during forty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God. 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 2:1–4 NKJV
1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

From these portions of Scripture we see the Holy Spirit has at least three relationships with the disciples… Jesus had said,

From these portions of Scripture we see the Holy Spirit has at least three relationships with the disciples… Jesus had said,
He dwells “with” you… Gk: “meno para hymin” (“men-o, pa-rah, who-mean”)(“…for He dwells with you…” )
He will be “in” you… Gk: “esomi en hymin” (“es-oh-my, en, who-mean”)(“…and will be in you…”; ; & , “…Breathed on them and said receive the Holy Spirit…”)
He will “come upon” you… Gk: “eperkhomi epi hymas” (“ep-err-kho-my, epi, ha-mas) (, “…you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit…”, “…you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you”)
The three relationships of the Holy Spirit with the disciples of Christ
He dwells “with” you
He will be “in” you
He will “come upon” you
As disciples of Christ, the Spirit has these same distinct relationships with us…
Before we knew Christ, the Spirit was with us
When we received Christ, the Spirit was in us
When filled with the Spirit, the Spirit has ‘come upon’ us… empowering and enabling (enduing and energizing)
When filled with the Spirit, the Spirit has ‘come upon’ us
The Apostle Paul writing to the first century church in Corinth, wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to assist that church in their gatherings… Concerning ‘Spirituals’ he wrote,
1 Corinthians 12:1–6 NKJV
1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant: 2 You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

There are diversity of gifts (Charisma)… but the same Spirit
There are differences of ministries (Diakonia)… but the same Lord
There are diversities of activities (Energema)… but the same God
Verse 1 notice ‘Gifts’ is in italics… it is not present in the Greek and is added for clarity… ??
Paul also says he does not want us to be ignorant… (Confusion regarding the spiritual activities…tongues and calling Jesus accursed)
