Matthew 19:23–26 ESV
23 And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Thesis:
Anyone can be saved, who wants to be saved but this world has developed in us an appetite for the temporal and not the eternal.
Introduction:
We are considering the questions asked of Jesus in the New Testament...
In considering these lessons, also consider your own questions for Jesus...
Tonight's question is, “Who Then Can be Saved?”
Asked in astonishment because Jesus was teaching about Riches and the Kingdom
Most people believe that the richer they are, the more blessed of God they are.
It is a difficult concept because most are on a happiness quest in life instead of a truth quest...

Money is an Earthly standard

We fool ourselves into thinking that we can serve the earthly standard that is money and serve the spiritual standard that is God...
Matthew 6:24 ESV
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Loving money puts us on course with evil.
This is a companion that does not play fair and is highly demanding.
Money is a master who changes the rules, and always ups the ante and requirements of success and happiness...
1 Timothy 6:10 ESV
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
It is not a sin to have money, just a sin to love it.
There is a standard of life for the rich and poor alike...
1 Timothy 6:17–19 ESV
17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
Money is not the currency for spiritual greatness.
Money is simply a tool that humans should mange for the glory of God.
Money cannot get your soul out from underneath the judgement...
Matthew 16:26 ESV
26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?
consider this:
(example foreign exchange of money)
When we give to the church that money is primarily to be transferred into Spiritual blessings and benefit
for the preaching of God’s Word
for the benevolence of the Saints
also the benevolence of our neighbor
for the assembling and fellowship of the Saints
money is a tool to used for the Kingdom of God
we need to consider how to exchange the physical blessings we’ve recieved in how to get the most spiritual bang for the buck
Eternal wealth is only found in God...

True Riches come from God

Salvation can be missed by pursuit and admiration of the wrong things...
Proverbs 12:12 ESV
12 Whoever is wicked covets the spoil of evildoers, but the root of the righteous bears fruit.
You do not have Biblical Wisdom if your goal in life is measured by earthly riches and pursuits...
Romans 1:32 ESV
32 Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
We send our days on earth chasing earthly rewards causing us to miss the eternal reward...
John 6:27 ESV
27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
Consider this next passage which happened right after Jesus fed the 5,000 and walked on water...
John 6:25–33 ESV
25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Jesus goes on to teach them that He is the bread of life...
Our eyes do not see..let us pray that he who has ears will hear the word that will save...

Who then Can be Saved?

Who then can be saved? The answer is anyone, but not everyone wants to be saved...
We would consider it wrong to force our love on those who do not want it.
Use example of boy forcing girl to love him...
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
So God loves man from a distance physically, yet spiritually he is not far from any of us...
He knows we are blinded and weak in the flesh, yet He still works to save us...
Romans 5:6–8 ESV
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
The work of salvation is done before we become aware of it...
While we are at enmity to God He has already gone to the cross...
2 Corinthians 5:19 ESV
19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
There is no greater love available for mankind...
1 John 4:9–10 ESV
9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. 10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
