Testimony about last week’s teaching? Theme Subject: The Holy Spirit in the time of Christ Specific Topic: Jesus Christ’s Announcement of the Holy Spirit’s Coming Context - What was happening Jesus was fully God and fully man. He was anointed by the Holy Spirit John1:33b (WMB) “'On whomever you will see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.’” (Holy Spirit) Was Holy Spirit anointing necessary? Phil 2:6-7 “Who, existing in the form of God didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.” Right after baptism = wilderness temptation. Main point, He was not alone. Holy Spirit present. Interaction 1 and 2 – Actual physical water compared to living water. Jesus was truly prophesying about a future event. Rev 19:10b (WMB) “Worship God, for the testimony of Yeshua is the Spirit of Prophecy”. #1. John 4:14 (WMB) “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst again; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." #2. John 7:38 (WMB) “He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water." Culture – Ancient Jewish #1. Jesus baptizing, making disciples. • Pharisees had heard. • Aroused their envy, jealousy, hatred. Jesus headed back to Galilee. • Weary from a long day of walking. • Rested while disciples went for food. Samaritan woman was at the well to draw water. • Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Cultural bias. • Jewish men don’t speak to women in public. Gender bias. #2. Festival of Booths. Sukkot. Remember the wilderness journey. • Small, temporary shelters, thatched roofs. • 7 days. At the end (8th day) a separate holiday. • Known in Hebrew as Hoshanna Rabba. • English as “the Great Hosanna.’’ Water-pouring ceremony added to recall Lord giving Israel water in desert. • The officiating priest would exit the Temple through the Water Gate holding a golden pitcher. • Walk several hundred yards to the pool of Siloam. • Fill the pitcher with water. • With musicians in tow, priest would gather the water. • All would march back to the temple. • The priest would take the water from the pitcher and spill it on the altar where the animals were sacrificed. • As he would do this, he would say, “Please, Lord, save us, hear our prayers.”  Condition – Dehydrated and dead Let’s look at thirst/dehydration. *from Stavros Kavouras, the director of the Hydration Science Lab at the University of Arkansas. Stage 1 Thirst Water lost: 2 % of body weight When thirst kicks in, your body clings to all remaining moisture. Your kidneys send less water to your bladder, darkening your urine. As you sweat less, your body temperature rises. Your blood becomes thicker and sluggish. To maintain oxygen levels, your heart rate increases. Stage 2 Fainting Water lost: 4% of body weight Your blood is so concentrated that the resulting decrease in blood flow makes your skin shrivel. Your blood pressure drops, making you prone to fainting. You've basically stopped sweating, and without this coolant, you start to overheat. Stage 3 Organ Damage Water lost: 7% of body weight Your body is having trouble maintaining blood pressure. To survive, it slows blood flow to nonvital organs, such as your kidneys and gut, causing damage. Without your kidneys filtering your blood, cellular waste quickly builds up. You're literally dying for a glass of water. Stage 4 Death Water lost: 10% of body weight You need to drink some water—stat! If it's hot out, your uncontrollable body temperature means your vital organs risk overheating; liver failure will probably kill you. But if conditions are mild, toxic sludge builds up in your blood, and your coroner's report will more likely read: kidney failure. Our spiritual condition before salvation – dead. Colossians 2:13a (WMB) “You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. ‘’ What we needed – life! John 4:13 (WMB) Yeshua answered her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again,” John 7:37 (WMB) Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Yeshua stood and cried out, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink!” What happens when we drink – life! Colossians 2:13b (WMB) “He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,” Mark 2:22 (WMB) “No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and the wine pours out, and the skins will be destroyed; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins." Stage 1 Thirst Water lost: 2 % of body weight When thirst kicks in, your body clings to all remaining moisture. Your kidneys send less water to your bladder, darkening your urine. As you sweat less, your body temperature rises. Your blood becomes thicker and sluggish. To maintain oxygen levels, your heart rate increases. Remedy for our condition – Salvation! Romans 10:9 (WMB) “that if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Yeshua, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Result of our conversion – Life! John 4:14b (WMB) “but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." John 7:38b (WMB) “from within him will flow rivers of living water."
