*Video: Brother of the Watch and fellow Kingsman: The Power of Simplicity *Title: My Daddy Said So *Text: Matt. 11:25-28 25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do. 27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Trans: Following Jesus by practicing Simplicity removes the enormously heavy burden that Duplicity puts on our shoulders. Practicing the Spiritual Discipline of Simplicity releases us from the strangling, suffocating yoke of Duplicity and frees us to become who God created us to be. *Simplicity is an inward reality that results in an outward lifestyle. Simplicity is focusing on one thing. Because “My Daddy said so!” *1. The Psychology of Duplicity *A. What we do… -Our society is focused on what we do… +We work 60, 80 hours a week to afford the lifestyle we think will make us happy… +We measure or compare ourselves to those around us to gain our security… +We seek the acceptance and approval of people we are trying to impress… +We seek after things we really don’t need or want…It’s crazy!!! *>Matt. 6:32-33 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.    *B. What we become… -As a result of following societies prescription for success and happiness... +We are more depressed, discouraged, and suicidal than ever before in recorded history… +We stink at relationships… +We are more anxious and stressed out than ever before… Ill: Here’s your sign…Bill Engvall *>Eccles. 7:30 says, “God made man simple; man’s complex problems are of his own devising.” *>Matt. 6:24 ““No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. *2. The Spiritual Discipline of Simplicity *A. What is a Spiritual Discipline? -A Spiritual Discipline is a practice Jesus followed during His ministry on earth… +For instance: Fasting is a practice Jesus followed and impressed upon His disciples to follow… +Prayer is a Spiritual Discipline…Submission is a Spiritual Discipline… -These are disciplines because we have to work at them…they do not come naturally… +How many of struggled at times with your fast? How many of us struggle at times with our daily devotions? How many struggle at times with studying God’s Word? Ill: Habits versus Disciplines…My morning routine is a habit…My morning devotional time is a discipline…I get up, comb my hair, shave, brush my teeth, clean my ears, put on aftershave, and take my vitamins in that order…In exactly that order… *B. What is Bible’s example of Simplicity? -In the OT the Israelites were told not to corrupt themselves with foreign gods… *>Deut. 6:3-5 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. This is Simplicity!!!! -In the OT we had 10 Commandments…In the NT we have 2… -The Pharisees had over 400 laws that you had to obey in order to be religious… -Jesus lived a very simple lifestyle… >Matt. 8:20 20 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” -The story of Mary and Martha… *>Luke 10: 38-42 38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” 41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” -Martha was trying to impress Jesus and those people around the house… -Mary chose to listen to Jesus…relationship… *3. The Daily Practice of Simplicity *A. It’s not who you are, but who’s you are that is important >1 Cor. 6:19-20 says “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” -Daily we must battle the flesh to focus on the Spiritual… -We must daily put our full trust in God…Husbands and Wives… -Who’s your provider? *B. It’s not what we think, but it’s what our Daddy says that is important *>Matt. 6:25-33 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[a]? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Daddy/Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.  -That is the essence of Simplicity… -The Burden of life becomes light; the yoke becomes easy… -We begin to experience a life without worry and stress… -Do you believe Jesus is all you need? Discussion Questions: 1. How should a “Followers of Christ” (FOC) lifestyle differ from someone who doesn’t follow Christ? 2. What do you see are the results of our society “running after all these things?” 3. Why is it so hard for FOC to not “run after all these things?” 4. What does “running after all these things” show a FOC about their relationship with Jesus? 5. Why was it so hard for Martha to sit and listen to Jesus? 6. How hard is it to depend on God and not on possessions? 7. As a group write a definition for Spiritual Discipline. 8. What does Jesus mean when He says we are not worry about what we eat or the clothes we wear? 9. What does this verse mean? As a group write this verse in your own words. 1 Cor. 6:19-20 says “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
