Success in the Lord under Kevin White's description

Notes
Transcript
Ever watched a TED talk, a political speech, a sermon from someone at a big church
Often seems like they know a whole lot, I don’t know that much about what I am talking about today.
Not saying I achieved it, It’s what I am working towards.
My friend shared with me an incredibly important message on success.
Success is encounters with God which create the stories of God that are found when we show up where God is at.
Success = Stories of God = Showing up * ?
Their is a crucial part.
Surrender
1 John 1:5–6 CSB
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light, and there is absolutely no darkness in him. 6 If we say, “We have fellowship with him,” and yet we walk in darkness, we are lying and are not practicing the truth.
God is the light by what we see. Sight is so very important to people.
This is a powerful metaphor. Sight is so very important to people and if you’ve ever been camping or know what it is like to be in your a building when the power goes out, you understand the metaphor.
God is not actually the wave or plasma that is light. This is a metaphor. God is love. God is the good
Therefore it is the metaphor of us saying that all wrong, evil, and bad is darkness. None of that is in God.
Therefore it is the metaphor of us saying that all wrong, evil, and bad is darkness. None of that is in God.
If you are with God, than you are in the light. Darkness and light do not co-mingle. As light ends, darkness begins.
Most things aren’t like this
Super Bowl Party with Andrew’s friends
As our election is less than one month away, you be of either party and be good. All politics has both good and bad.
Even wet, things can be sort of wet, a little damp, moist
Not with light, yes or no.
Not in God. No darkness.
Application -
The pursuit of a follower of Jesus is Jesus.
Light in my morals, in how I love others, in what I do with my time, in what in my goals for my kids, in my friendships, in my church
Those who think they can be in both worlds. He wasn’t perfect but good, nice guy, can’t wait to see him in Heaven. Wait, what?
This built in a biblical truth. We need to be in the light but we can’t be.
Romans 8:3 CSB
3 What the law could not do since it was weakened by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh as a sin offering,
Romans 7:5 CEV
5 When we thought only of ourselves, the Law made us have sinful desires. It made every part of our bodies into slaves who are doomed to die.
This verse ends in an upsetting metaphor as us being slaves, without power, payment, will to sin.
We can not change this on our own. Ask anyone who has been angry, addicted, mean, sexually immoral, whatever sin you can think of once they chose to not do that one sin did all sin go away. Did that sin go away? No, we are powerless to live in the light. We need a Savior
Romans 8:3–4 The Message
3 God went for the jugular when he sent his own Son. He didn’t deal with the problem as something remote and unimportant. In his Son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all. The law code, weakened as it always was by fractured human nature, could never have done that. The law always ended up being used as a Band-Aid on sin instead of a deep healing of it. 4 And now what the law code asked for but we couldn’t deliver is accomplished as we, instead of redoubling our own efforts, simply embrace what the Spirit is doing in us.
Law tells us this is wrong. Our sinful nature says I want to try it or don’t tell me, or I’m hurting and that looks like it will stop my hurt so I’m going to do it.
Jesus comes in, pays the consequence, and then gives us the Holy Spirit that rearranges all of our life.
Luke 19:10 CSB
10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save the lost.”
But the temptation can be as outlined in the book of Romans ch 6 to turn our lives that are free from sin through Jesus Christ and attempt to justify going back to being slaves of sin because we will receive more forgiveness.
This is the sign of a person who went to rehab to get out of jail not a person who went to rehab to get rehabilitation
If I’m not pursuing Christ with my business and with my money than I’m pursuing darkness
Whether you’re a good guy, a good kid, whatever.
There is a separation light/dark.
Please don’t mistake this for Christian products, politics, or that every current tv show has a Christian who is either a judgmental loser, irrelevant,
Today our culture has a large mix of morality that is constantly changing as it moves in and out of influencers as at one time called demeaning and degrading is called empowering and full of power.
Yet God
I hate being called evil or wrong or mean but our culture will change. Heroes become villains, sins become blessings and most people will change what is right or important to fit their own ends.
Yet God’s light doesn’t change.
Galatians 5:22 CSB
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Galatians 5:22–23 CSB
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. The law is not against such things.
I have a bad question, that I have a tendency to ask that most people can never answer, “What does God want to do in your life right now?”
This weekend has been very hard.
When you are in your daily lives, be it with your lover, your kids, your co-workers, fellow students,Those who have fellowship with Christ bring more kindness there. They bring more good there. They bring more self-control.
What that looks like in every place, relationship can be a little different.
My first thought like perhaps yours is to get my feelings to change. But while feelings are real, I have surrendered acting on those to follow Christ.
Galatians 5:19–21 CSB
19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Gal
Galatians 5:19–21 The Message
19 It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; 20 trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; 21 the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. This isn’t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God’s kingdom.
While I am furious with my enemies or those who wrong me, Jesus doesn’t tell me to hurt them as I have felt. But to love them, this is the fruit of the Spirit.
There is further definition of love and stuff but the point while I might seek substances or habits to cure my sour mood, self-control is what I am called.
THis is impossible for me.
Luke 18:27 CSB
27 He replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
What is my role than?
Surrender.

Success = stories of God when we surrender and show up.
