Text - John 3.3-8
John 3:3–8 NKJV
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
Title - The Necessity Of New Birth

Background

a Jewish teacher comes to Jesus at night
Jesus talks to him about the importance of new birth
Nicodemus does not understand the concept

Issues to Discuss

what is the most common concept about the biblical term “born again”
why did Jesus teach this doctrine?

What is “born again”

It means being born “from above”
Grk. anothen (John 3.3)
to be born “again” is to be born “from above”, in contrast to being born on earth
It means to experience another birth, but from a different seed
1 Peter 1.23
1 Peter 1:23 NKJV
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever,
It means to be born of God, to become a child with God as your Father.

New birth and salvation

The New Birth is the means of salvation which God has provided for sinners in the present age.

Salvation - its basic meaning is deliverance

Salvation is a movement from a place of danger to a place of safety
from the power of darkness to the kingdom of Christ
Colossians 1:13 NKJV
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,
from death to life
John 5:24 NKJV
24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
1 Peter 1:3 NKJV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 1:23–25 NKJV
23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, 24 because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, 25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
from the present evil age
Galatians 1:4 NKJV
4 who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
from wrath (God’s)
1 Thessalonians 1:10 NKJV
10 and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
New Birth is the means of transfer (salvation)
John 3:5 NKJV
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
“enter”

How New Birth Happens

There must be repentance - an acknowledgement of sins and sinfulness.
There must be faith in Christ and His work
John 1:12–13 NKJV
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
There is a gift of Holy Spirit - God’s acknowledgement
Acts 2:38 NKJV
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 15:8 NKJV
8 So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us,

The blessings of New Birth

The grass withers, And its flower falls away, 25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
1 Peter 1:3 NKJV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
