Intro:

AG: Miracle on 34th str Skeptic mother who has denied belief all movie turns at the end and encourages her disappointed daughter by saying, “You must have faith.” When’s Susie asks what’s that?” she says Faith is believing in things when common sense tells you not to.”
TS: A more Biblical definition is giving in . This chapter has been referred to as faith’s hall of fame. The author goes through a list of well known names and deeds. The point, however, is that the common thread was faith, not heroics!
Hebrews 10:38–11:6 ESV
but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. By faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice than Cain, through which he was commended as righteous, God commending him by accepting his gifts. And through his faith, though he died, he still speaks. By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Hebrews 10:37–11:6 ESV
For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls. Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the people of old received their commendation. Hebrews 1

Faith Defined

Written like Hebrew poetry
2 nearly identical phrases meaning the same thing
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
assurance of hope and conviction of the unseen
conviction of the unseen
This faith is the surest of convictions
substance- exact representation
It is based not on empirical evidence (like science) but divine assurance
Ephesians 2:8 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
eph
This faith is both believing and trusting
even if common sense, earthly wisdom, and evidence say otherwise.
It is a tenacious faith that leads to action!
IL: Faith to get on a roller coaster
you don’t ask to see the specs
you don’t check the logs of failures
You don’t ask for the engineer’s credentials
You trust and get on! (or not!)

Faith is the substance of our hopes

IL: substance of the pulpit is wood
Substance of our hope is faith
Not a mystical force in and of itself
Faith in GOD!
We trust Him to be who He says He is and do what He has promised
We hope in Him to be faithful to His word

Faith is the evidence of the unseen

The spirit world is unseen
We can’t see the Holy Spirit
Most of the time angels, demons, etc. are invisible
Yet they are a reality!
1 Peter 1:6–8 ESV
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,
We love and worship God, though we haven’t seen Him
Faith is all the evidence we need this morning.
Our fallen world is much more tolerable due to faith

Faith Practiced

Saving Faith

Romans 1:17 ESV
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:16–17 ESV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Galatians 3:11 ESV
Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”
We are saved by faith
justified- declared right and whole by GOD through faith.

Living Faith

Hebrews 11:6 ESV
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Heb:11:6
All of the heroes of the faith mentioned in ch 11 had faith in common
We cannot please God without it!
This faith leads to action!
James 2:14–26 ESV
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.

Conclusion:

Have faith!
Trust and Repent
Live for Him
