Recap

What happened last week?
God led the Israelites out of Egypt. He used Moses, even though Moses was “slow of speech and slow of tongue” to demand that Pharoah let the Israelites go. When Pharoah refused, God sent 7 plagues upon the Egyptian people, culminating in the Passover, where God killed the first born of every house that wasn’t marked by the blood of the lamb.

Key Events

God leads the people in a cloud of wind or a pillar of fire to the base of Mount Sinai
He calls Moses to the top of the mountain to meet with God.
God gives Moses the covenant, that “If you obey me (God) fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”
Moses returns to the people to prepare for the third day, when he will meet with God again.
On the third day God descends on Mount Sinai and calls Moses up to Him.
God sends Moses back down to warn the people and bring Aaron back up with him
God gives Moses and Aaron the 10 commandments
Exodus 20:2–17 ESV
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. “You shall not murder. “You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Moses goes back to the Israelites and tell them God’s law, which they agree to, thus creating the Mosaic Covenent.
God called Moses back up to the mountain, to give him more instructions, and Moses was up there forty days and forty nights.
While Moses was on the mountain, the Israelites got restless and told Aaron to make them a new “god”, so he forged them a calf out of gold and they made offerings to it.
God told Moses that the people were worshipping a new “god”, and that He would kill them all
Moses asked God to allow him to go down to them instead. Moses goes down and throws down the tablets in anger, breaking them. He melts the calf back down and calls together the loyal people.
Moses and the loyal Levites kill those who continue to worship the calf and rebel against God.
God strikes the remaining Israelites with a plague.
God continues to be with the Israelites by coming down to the tent of meeting in a cloud to meet with Moses.
God reveals His glory to Moses when Moses asks, and Moses’ face is radiant as a result, so radiant that he scares the other Israelites and takes to wearing a veil.
The people of God continued to follow His presence towards the promised land, a cloud of wind in the day, and a pillar of fire in the night.

Where is Jesus in this part of the story?

God meets with Moses and the people on the third day after offering His covenant, Jesus rode from the dead on the third day, shortly after creating the New Covenant

Discussion

What was the point of the law?
Was it really for the Israelites to follow it word for word or was it to point towards our need for a savior?
The law is a mercy, not a burden.
Why did the Israelites rebel so quickly?
God was VISIBLE ON THE MOUNTAINTOP as the Israelites created the golden calf.
When do we rebel from God? What proof do we have of His existence?
