If we keep Sinning
Hebrews 10:26–27 ESV
For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries.
go on sinning deliberately:
The author is speaking rhetorically
He has emphasized that we CANNOT fall away
But he goes down this line of reasoning to point out the ludicrous idea of the spiritual yoyo
I’m saved.... I’m lost… I’m saved.... I’m lost
We are not on a spiritual teeter totter!
This text is warning of apostasy
A debated passage of Scripture.
Some people would tell you that this talking about a non-saved person; but that is not true.
Now, this is a highly debated passage of Scripture. Some people would tell you that this talking about a non-saved person; but that is not true. Notice that this person has already received the knowledge of the truth. This person has made the decision to just do whatever they want to do, regardless of the fact that it is sin.

So, does the rebellious child of God in danger of losing their salvation?
No; but they give a bad name to their Savior.
This text is warning of apostasy
A child of God who deliberately defects and walks away from the faith.
Intentional act which is habitual
Ignoring the truth and embracing sin in their walk.
IN OT standard, such an act would lead to removal from the congregation of Israel and stopped them from ever seeking refuge in the cities of refuge.
There is a certain judgment coming for them.
2 Thessalonians 1:7–9 ESV
and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,
1 John 2:19 ESV
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
1 John 2:
Penalty of Rejection
Hebrews 10:28–31 ESV
Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
Heb 10:28
Degrees of punishment in hell.
OT Example:
OT Example:
Under the law, if one rejected the way of God and there were witnesses, many sins had capital punishment as the penalty
Adultery, murder, etc.
Rejecting Christ
More severe!
Trampling His blood
Disrespect
Judgment.
God will avenge!
Look again at 31
Dreadful thing!
Hebrews 12:6 ESV
For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”
In discussing this judgment, we must remember that one’s eternal destiny is sealed forever the moment he or she places faith in Jesus Christ.

John 10:28 ESV
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

God judges in this life.
Today we will face consequences of sin
Today, we may fall under His wrath.
A and S
Remember
Hebrews 10:32–35 ESV
But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.
We receive here encouragment
A contrast is set up between the Apostate and the saint
:
They nearness of the reward should strengthen their resolve to remain faithful
The reminder of the judgment should prevent their backsliding.
“remember” - reconstruct. go back and relive their conversion
After being enlightened, they suffered, , became offended, and began falling away.
v. 33, they are reminded that their lives are a spectacle.
Hebrews 10:33 ESV
sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated.
They were visible and a walking testimony
Some had exposed themselves to arrest and harassment because they sought to help the persecuted.
Persevere in the Faith
Hebrews 10:36–39 ESV
For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For, “Yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
We are challenged to endure
Taken from
Isaiah 26:20 ESV
Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until the fury has passed by.
Our time on earth is limited
Be it good or full of sorrow, it is temporary
We are not those who shrink and turn away
Instead we.
Have faith
Persevere
God keeps us saved
God keeps working to conform us to His image.
38 And, “But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

Hang in there!
