Entice: What do you do? Some make a living doing one thing, and a life doing another. Blessed are those whose living and life are consumed by a single passion. Jesus may have been a builder by trade. But He made His life in Mission. Pursing Mission. Running down His Mission. For Jesus the Mission is everything.

...Mission is everything.

Luke 4:14–15 ESV
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.
Engage: What is your Passion? Your Mission?

What do. You. Do?

Too many Christians envision their faith as worship on Sunday, devotions and prayer, perhaps even, a time of personal study. That’s it... But it is not the core of who they are. It is not surprising that the 20th and 21st century church has had to spend so much time, talent, and treasure to appeal to those who have embraced Faith in Jesus, but not necessarily the Mission of Jesus. Oh how I wish I could explain to you how revolutionary it is to live each day in pursuit of His divine purpose.

Expand: Jesus basic approach to mission is summarized in . From vs. 16-30 we see a specific message He preached and the reaction of those who heard. They were religious! They were virtuous! They were also filled with pride and assured that their way was the best way. In this text Jesus provides a far different vision for living righteously in pursuit of God's divine Mission.

Body of Sermon:

1. Our Mission should be Clear.

Luke 4:16–21 ESV
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

1.1 Biblical.

1.2 Authoritative.

1.3 Definitive.

2. Our Mission will be Provocative.

Luke 4:22–27 ESV
22 And all spoke well of him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from his mouth. And they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?” 23 And he said to them, “Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, ‘ “Physician, heal yourself.” What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.’ ” 24 And he said, “Truly, I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up three years and six months, and a great famine came over all the land, 26 and Elijah was sent to none of them but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”

2.1 Expands Biblical applications.

2.2 Defies conventional expectations.

2.3 Extends community inclusion.

3. Our Mission must be Robust.

Sturdy.

Resilient.

Tough.

Luke 4:28–30 ESV
28 When they heard these things, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. 29 And they rose up and drove him out of the town and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they could throw him down the cliff. 30 But passing through their midst, he went away.

3.1 Because...Sometimes the hyper-spiritual are hyper-sensitive!

the hyper-spiritual are hyper-sensitive!

Anger boils under the surface, they don’t like to be challenged. They are constantly looking for reinforcement. They are immature and don’t want to be stretched. Their minds are made up.

3.2 Because...Sometimes we will face reactions which are not reasonable. 29

Some are quick to anger…easily offended. There’s always a hill, a cross, a stone, or killing words available to assassinate the righteous. I’m not advocating picking fights or seeking out martyrdom. But there was a time that being tough-minded, stable, and sturdy in faith meant being able to hold our own in argument, hold our place in society, and protect our witness in public-without depending on the public purse or public opinion.

3.3 Because...Sometimes we will need to Act boldly.

We will need to look our society, our culture, our community, our world in the eye, ignore their threats-and continue with the mission.

A Day of Worship; A way of Life...

The synagogue in Nazareth was filled with worshippers. People who gathered to pray and learn. Jesus vision was that the filling of synagogues, the gathering of the assembly, the calling of the Church was for the purpose of preparing, sending, and emptying the place of worship with a mission-driven people. Maybe that's why some people get bored with worship or tired of instruction. They invest their spiritual capital in service and wonder why it rusts.
Jesus led worship led worship that day in Nazareth...and then redefined what worship was for and redirected it for the purpose of fueling service. A clear, provocative, robust mission-could get you killed; and it could save the world. Jesus teaches us that both are either are possible and their is joy, excitement, and energy in following Him into that ministry.
Will you obey His voice? Will you accept His call? Will you follow Him completely...When Jesus comes to town?
