Opening Prayer
Introduction
It is not lost on my that I am part of the only Hillview member household with young children in the home. I’m about to preach about how Christian love is manifested between parents and children. So...
Pay attention
I preach this for several reasons. First and foremost, I believe that this issue is of crucial importance to understand for the Christian, whether or not they are a part of a household with young children.
Second, even for those who may legitimately find the topic less applicable, I am still charged with teaching you the whole counsel of God...
Third, many times we learn these things not simply for ourselves. If you have Grandchildren or great grandchildren, this is helpful information that you can now be equipped to pass on.
Big Idea

A loving relationship between parents and children is rooted in a discipleship relationship that should go beyond childhood.

Exposition 1
The first principle...

I. Children love their parents by relating to them in honorable obedience (1-3)

Ephesians 6:1–3 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Explain Text
Unlike last weeks message, this is less controversial to a degree. It is expected that parents raise their children to be law abiding citizens
However, this is still different and even changing...
Applications:
Children:
You need to always try to do what your parents tell you.
It is good for you
illustrate
It is right
Your parents want the best for you and really do know better
Parents:
Teach your children to obey
Take the responsibility seriously
Don’t accept disobedience
(Great) Grandparents:
Mentor your believing adult children as they seek to raise their children for the Lord
Reinforce your children’s direction for their kids, even when you have some disagreement
If you have a significant disagreement that you believe needs to be addressed, do it in private so as not to undermine your Children’s authority over their own kids.
Going back to parents (and other adult children):
While you, as parents, are no longer under your parents authority, the command to honor them is still in effect
Honor while still doing what you have prayerfully considered and have determined is right
Don’t disrespect a parents suggestions, even if they don’t deliver it rightly.
I would encourage you to always, if possible, reevaluate your decision if your parent has told you that they don’t believe you are making a wise decision

Exposition 2

II. Parents, love your children by leading them is such a way that cultivates Christlikeness.

Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Explain verse
Applications:
Parents:
You have a primary responsibility with raising your children to be disciplined and obedient to God.
In other words, disciple your child
Be carful that you know how your child will react to correction
Different kids may require different forms of correction
Children:
Know that your parents desire in correction is not to hurt you but to help you
Conclusion
Parents, don’t lose sight of the need to disciple your children
People with living parents, don’t give up a discipleship relationship with your parents because you feel that you have outgrown them.
