Read this here to you this morning and then we'll pray and dive in. It is actually reported. There is sexual immorality among you and of a kind that is not tolerated even among the pagans. A man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant. You not rather to mourn let him who has done this be removed from among you for the lapse in his body and present and Spirits if the present I've already pronounce judgment on the one who did such a thing when you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present with the power of our Lord Jesus you are to deliver this man to Satan for his destruction of the flesh. So that his Spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord. Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that A little leaven leavens the whole lump cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump as you really are unleavened for Christ Our Passover Lamb has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival not with the old leaven leavens of malice and evil book The unleavened bread sincerity and truth. I wrote to you in my letter or not to associate with sexually immoral people at all. Meaning sexually more of the world are the greedy swindlers our daughters since then you would need to go out in the world, but now I'm not writing to you but now I'm running to you not to associate with anyone who Bears the name of brother is guilty of sexual immorality Creed idolatry regular drunkard swindler not even to eat with such as 1/4. What have I to do with judging Outsiders is it not those inside the church converted garage outside Purge the evil person from among you Lord we ask for clarity of confusion. Where's your spirit to guide and lead us as we spend time talking about this subject be with us in your name? Amen. Amen. Amen. 17 years old. I was tasked by my church. Is that young man? Who was in Youth Group to begin to lead a Bible study. And as I was asked to leave this Bible study, there's a handful of kids and I began she really multiply Kids come out of the study where there's about 6570 Junior High 7th and 8th graders actuary non deodorant stinky kinds of kids. It was just a horrible environment, but it was exciting and fun and just amazing to be a part of and I chose at that time to teach through the letter of Romans. Hello horrible idea. First of all who ahead of me okayed me to teach the letter of Romans at 16 to 17 years old of age. That was probably a little bit of a foolish mistake. However, I did this and I had a handful of commentaries and I approached a text and I still remember to this day. I outline this text and I opened the study with you know, what I'm so sick of all the don't don't do this and don't do that and I really painted actually a lot of scripture in a negative lights and I talked to my pastor who was overseeing me. He was only about three years older than me cuz that's how a youth ministry tends to work. He he pulled me aside afterwards. Private room me and him. Anyhow Brett body. That was horrible. That was terrible and I was a and maybe still am a little bit of a sensitive person and my eyes begin to feel fill with tears. Well up there and I kind of looked at him and what do you mean and he goes man just the whole way you approach to? Who do you consult with? Nobody? Did you read any commentaries this week in high school? And what are you talkin about it and there was this moment where he looked at many Sabrett. I think that someday there's a future for you in teaching and preaching the Bible and it's better that me Seth your youth pastor corrects you then you getting yourself in a whole lot more trouble and it hit me in that moment. I've never felt so broken yet complete. So in a sense wounded but filled up because here is a brother in my life a little bit older than me who had the love and care and Is them to come to me? This wasn't an area that needed were talking about today church discipline, but it certainly could have turned into something that I've been rebellious and said, what do you know? I can teach things how I want to teach things and I can tell you what the text actually says and I have some kind of authority but yet he came lovingly carrying me alongside of Me and You Begin to talk to me in that moment. Correction is painful isn't correction, especially in a western culture that despises this keyword is a thing that we don't ever want to hear from anybody that maybe I missed the Mark or was off or I'm offended somebody or something has gone wrong in my life and I'm blind to it. We don't want to hear that we have correction needed in our life and yet we come to this text in 1st Corinthians, and we finally get to move past me always talking about the Sophos in the problems of division and everything that was going on in 1st Corinthians and Paul now moves on to this new problem in the church. Now this new problem in the church has to do in this area of sexual immorality and if you were living in the Corinthian Society in that day their society before that the ancient so we think ancient being this one, but even before that was highly driven by sexual immorality where they had a thousand Temple Priestess who would come down and sleep with the men these prostitutes being involved in the worship to God for that culture from more than a new one was built up but held on too much of this sexually driven identity that they had come from The idle worship involve sexual immorality the men coming into the town in the port it demanded in their eyes sexual immorality to happen. And so you have this culture much like ours today this culture that would be on par with Vegas. I'm not saying don't go to Vegas. But if you go to Vegas with the intentions like their dad and corn that might be a little trouble if you don't go to Vegas and you couldn't be a Corinthian without seeing something that was graphic or obscene at some point in your life is very sexually accepting culture around them and here is this man, and we don't know a lot about him. But anytime something's mentioned where this man and your mom are going to the prom in the hotel afterwards. That's not a good idea. Those things shouldn't be put together. You see this man whether it was his mom his step-mom or some other horrible kind of relationship. He is actually sleeping with her and the Corinthian they're flying him in the church. Look at our Liberty. Look at our freedom. Look at what Christ has set us free to do. We're not bound by any more elastic our moral code. We get to celebrate this freedom in Christ. You should join in with us and Tall says you not to mourn. Yes this man. Who's doing something whole riffic horrible, but even the Corinthian culture said bro. We would not even go there. And the church's response rather than sit down with him rather than talk with him. They actually celebrated his sin and kind of imagined the small group. They come in and check it out. Just two consenting adults. The relationships okay, otherwise got the title of God doesn't judge anybody got absolutely tolerance. God wants us to be naked and happy that his motive for the human life a little bit. But is it not what is in abundance in our society today? Is that not the idea that's being pushed upon us and you could say I've got this freedom, but freedom is not always good. Better to be a slave to Christ because if you're a slave to your last that's going to own you demand of you and take of you. You can be a slave to the Lord to Life Giving Him for feeling or you're a slave to your own demands and instincts and inclinations. Do we have a problem in corn? This Freedom that they were experiencing was leading them toward the terrible path of sin towel on top of sin and that sin ultimately leads to death and you have this idea that freedom apart from preister tolerance. It's not always good when you call the rate that which God does not tolerate your declaring God to be evil. And this is where this culture is at the call is not to affirmation. It is to everybody's welcome. Everybody can come in. But this idea that there's repentance and home open the gospel being poured into our hearts and lives and people can look at the situation and corn to go if you loved me you would accept me, but the reality is it because you loved me you will correct me. This is how it works in the family unit, isn't it? Because you love your children because you love your spouse because you love your friends when there's something wrong. What do we do? We come to them and we correct them. Why not just a week and be right and not we so we can go on a power trip and have it our way. It's an effort to bring about the flourishing of a community that you're actually in. correction happens we need it. We do this for example with her kids. If we don't correct them and then we've seen those situations were correction doesn't happen at Target is a prime example of this you're watching a mom pushing the cart with three or four kids in the fourth one is on the ground doing this and just freaking out right and and to correct the kid moms. Like if you just give you an ice cream, like we'll just make it better. Let's just get through this. Okay, that's a really really good idea if we can just get past this and often. If we don't correct correct wrongly to be promoted horrible Behavior and the other kids are going and get away with it. If I get ice cream for that then it begins to infect the entire family. This is why this is a problem and Corrin. Is this man and we're saying it's okay for him to live this way and be this way in act this way what happens when this new follower of Jesus comes into the community. Lenient in the in the same ways. The reality is the church has a responsibility to one another. This is something that I have been teaching and preaching on over and over again in 1st Corinthians and the western church and Western culture has a big issue with this today or misunderstanding or Ron framework when it comes to the church. It's not that we don't value Church many of you definitely value Church your hair regularly given to you you give up your time your talent and treasure Thursday at 6:30 in the evening you down in the sump pump with me. It's in the poop problem down there. That was fun hug. I was acting like you're giving of your time. It's not that we don't value it for the needs to be this paradigm shift in our mindset of what church actually is and that it's not something we do. or go with something or someone or people that we belong to if this idea a belonging to one another is not a part of your framework of church that you come here for coffee donuts and a TED Talk truly. That's what it is. I hope it inspires me today. I hope you motivate my life today. I hope there's some insight to make this problem go away and things get better and then we walked out of here as individual forgetting that were actually called together to engage with one another to be connected to one another in a far more intimate with you read the language of the New Testament. It brings about this family style of language to what it means to be a body of Christ in the local church. And this is the framework that I hope we have here at redeemers this idea that the church is a group of people that we belong to not a social club but a family a body not a place that I just go to worship and hopefully learn something and get some free childcare for an hour. Replace that I'm committed to.

Place that when I speak into my life I can trust them. I can listen to We spent time together a place where it's not like a gym membership you got in a call if we can buy something doesn't go my way or they didn't have the machines. I want it are they were out of whites today, so I can't go back to that gym anymore. That's disgusting. That's how often people view the church but this idea that were a body for a family that were committed to one another. Do we see the church as the community and told us here. Some low-level Club to put your self-esteem to get through the next week in order to feel good and better about yourself people. You're actually connected with And redeemers there's a reason I believe that we're growing as a church. There's a reason I believe that there are far less empty seats today than there were three months ago because many of us have bought into this idea and we deeply crave it in our hearts and our lives. We want to be committed to one another that has a lot of implications threats. And what does text is teaching us? First and foremost is what does it mean to be a body? What does it look like to disciple one another now? There's two ways the church disciples people. In fact is really two ways that we even disciple or kid. We disciple community Through formative discipline and through corrective discipline for me the discipline of what's happening. Right. Now. We're teaching we're talkin were explaining we're giving instruction form of discipline is when somebody come and goes. Hey, I'm a young adult and I'm really really bad with money like I get it and it's gone. Can you can you put me in touch with somebody to talk to to help me or not to teach me how to handle this? Absolutely. We can March First Financial Peace University. I'm really bad and struggling and failing in this area anger when it comes to my children or my spouse. Is there somebody who can begin to change me to train me to talk to me about what scripture says format of discipline is one of the reasons We Gather every single week at the church in order to be Look up in price in the figure out what it looks like to live a Godly life figure out what it looks like and how to operate in the household of faith formative discipline is happening all the time. You are constantly being talked to by society and commercials ads and billboards my friends and networks and they're telling you ways in which you're going to get the good life. You're going to be successful. You're going to matter. You're going to be an important people all around us are trying to form a formative discipline formative discipleship. And there is a call on the church when I say the church not just one person or a few leaders to participate in that before the body of Christ to pool their resources together in order to train up and walk in the thing of Jesus formative discipline is incredibly important and we're being connected as a body in that more learning and growing and but not only that at times there is corrective discipline. effective discipline What happens when something used to be corrected pretty self-explanatory but corrective discipline is not to bring about judgment or shaming but repentance hope and life corrective discipline seeks to correctly inappropriate actions and behaviors and things that are going on in order that before the Lord. If things don't always go how they shouldn't her life. And sometimes we do wrong unintentionally intentionally and somebody comes along side of us and begins to speak into us, but I was removed to Medford, Oregon and we moved in you guys probably know if you've been in any town is always a good side of town and a bad side of town and then there's a bad side of the good side of town. We moved into the bad side of the good side of town. My mom's chuckling and let me just illustrate why I believe this is true. So five blocks away king-size candy bars in Halloween my street like dollar Tootsie, Pops. That was one that was one idea to my street parents. Never around no discipline. Nobody at home peace and point out trick-or-treating 9 years old. I know right? I would never let my kid do that alone. So, so we're out in this neighborhood me and two of my friends and one of my friends. I don't know if you knew this other guys got a year older than all of us, and I don't know what he did. If you said something mean or made a gesture or whatever, but it got this guy's attention, and he took off running after us and his friend started cheering him on as we were running and me and Andy we were faster than Randy Randy and he tackled him beat him up and stole his free candy the neighborhood. I grew up in fighting. It's fun stuff it in his neighborhood life in weapons, and you learn how to talk and speak in Afton. I remember going over to my friend's house and she was a Christian's Christian family and we were sitting in there. We're playing Sega CD. Saturn is after the Genesis it was epic. Let's see some young ones in here. So I won't say everything in this but I was playing the race card game and I kept losing I kept saying a really bad word. It would be word Hannah was knowing you're thinking of is the other one just sold, whatever it is. That will not go well for you. I am doing something not good and corrects me. I didn't know I was doing wrong for a lot of us find ourselves there a lot of Christians saved in the last year your quarantine your this new church and Incredibly Progressive secular society is a secular they believe in all of the Gods and they worship them in all kinds of ways. Heather going like don't sleep with your mom really shouldn't do any more idea as Christians. We need to have this formative off in time all the time formative discipline, but when it hasn't sent into US corrective discipline comes in sometimes wasn't intentional right afterwards, you know, it wasn't right. You just feel it sink in your heart. You're calling your friend like me I shouldn't have said that that was gossip that was wrong. That was painful. Sorry. We do things intentionally. Regardless we need somebody to come alongside of us and correct us. When he committed brothers and sisters are actively participating in our Christian walk in her life who call us out. Natural products here and it's painful right Hebrews 12:11 for the moment all discipline seems painful rather than Pleasant a later a yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

trained by discipline Do that and raising our children, we do that even in the church at times trained by discipline doesn't seem friendly doesn't seem fun. But it is necessary for our growth. And so what Paul is saying to the churches here is how I want you to handle this man, but I don't want you to be vindictive. I don't want you to be vengeful and wrathful. I don't want you to embarrass him, right but the luck you need to talk to him and you need to correct him why correction this discipline it ought to lead to Restoration. Correction, that doesn't lead to Restoration his punishments. And Schwartz raffle is proving a point making your case. It's getting your way getting Justice on your terms. That's what punishment is. But when we begin with the end in mind, what is the end in any kind of Correction restoration Redemption hope Boutique in any situation, whether it's personal and private or it's bigger large-scale. The whole idea is we want correction in order to bring about Restorations Galatians 6:1 brothers and sisters if someone is caught in sin you who live by the spirit should restore that person.

Chatlee you should come to them and be about the restoration and this means we must begin with the end in mind that this whole idea this whole process is we want to Aid and assist and help somebody who's in a situation. That is not good or right? Why in the world would the church practice what Paul lays out? Let me tell you something 1st. Corinthians 5 is probably not going to be taught in a lot of churches this year. I avoided it for 6. Let's just be real and honest about that. This is a painful hard situation because if you have been around long enough who is singing Church correction discipline, whatever they want to call it go really really poorly I have Shoot. I've been a part of it and it's gone poorly. We got to learn to be in your own like maybe some of you I heard stories of people this week. I talk to people that don't go to our church about this a bunch of people who go to our church about this and they're all telling these situations and these stories and sometimes Church Authority in churches just have a personal Vendetta against a person and so they come up with an idea ostracize and put them out in an area that doesn't have to do with anything that Paul is talking about Oh my goodness. This is such a difficult thing to grasp at times. Why would we even want to participate or take a look at it or consider it worth its love for the individual. I hear she might be brought to repentance.

Love for the church. The weaker sheep might be protected. Love for the watching world. That we might see Christ that they might see Christ transforming power love for Christ of the church's might have hold his name-o. Follow after him. What does Paul say to do in the situation goes? Guys are going to have to judge. And we're going. No way judge, there's two verses every new Christian nose. And it's that whole idea of judge not lest you be judged and every seed that bears for every plant that bears seed is good for you, you know, so they want to do what they don't want to judge and they want to get high. These are the verses that they know coming in here. This is their minds as their mentality and this is my Jesus is what I want and hear Paul says you are going to have to judge that we live in incredibly judgmental Society. First of all, I'm in the McDonald's drive-thru and you like help nobody can use this or the for kids in the back or getting Happy Meals. Do you want you want yogurt or double double? Don't say it and I'll take a super-sized and you can feel it coming through the microphone like yeah, they're getting the super sized ones. Okay, I know what kind of person you are. Right and we can just feel so don't judge in those situations. We can feel judged and I'm coming off in a business deal with a very judgemental Society actually. tipping off nice enough

I don't even end up on Twitter. We live on age and then a judgmental culture. Truly truly missed some good at gratifications around this me and the guy who's got a history of sex offending is not going to be teaching 3rd grade in elementary school. Here. Is he

I was talking about is not this like childish Styler judging that we think of looking somebody up and down everything about you girl. Whole Dia charging he saying is you need to make a judgment call on this man. I have this isn't right. Is that saying go looking for people in the church to judge? You'll find them really quick. I promise but don't go looking for them. He doesn't say go drudge up everybody's problems and sin and looks like crucifying and bring it to the front of the room and let's get this thing rolling. Now. He doesn't say any of that. He says look at every situation this situation particularly everybody knew this man, even the Gentiles the pagans. When do you shouldn't do that? That's disgusting bro. It's bad for you. It's bad for those around you galatian says if someone is caught in sin not if you dredged it up dug it out of them if someone is caught in sin the ideas that you need to store them and this is what Paul is calling us to do. We know we don't judge Outsiders. We have to play as you tishell rule within the church. When I say we I don't mean to select few on a board. I mean the church are responsibilities right and collectively to the church. That's what we're supposed to do. Now. The problem is we end up being really heavy-handed with those we shouldn't be heavy-handed with and we end up being well really soft handed with those. We need to be heavy-handed. The church has gotten this wrong for centuries. I'm talking to a guy. He's the pastor. Tell me the story in the small town of everybody knew these people which is not here. and he said the came into our church and everybody knew their back story and it was not the best and they are in a situation that shouldn't have been in and some things that happened and then they came to a potluck the potluck would be safe going to church at a potluck pot lights are not fake. You always go home with something with a cold or something else. Okay, but just to be safe environment and what happened to the small community and universities garbage there is people in their Church who circled these people who are not Christians begin to ridicule them and act 1st Corinthians 5 and tell him they were not welcomed at the church.

Redeemers if that ever happens here you will be in my office and we'll have a Stern talk to you. That is so wrong. I didn't happen just once but he was able to four months to get them to come back to church and it happened again. You got to be kidding me. We look at people coming in at don't know Jesus in rock shame shame. I know your name. You better get it, right and then we go put Jesus says come as you are and he still loving you so graciously so kind or what do they see a monster people a bunch of judgemental arrogant proud boasting self-righteous Christians. That's how often people are perceived become. So heavy-handed. Why would we expect anything? If you're not a Christian istick nothing of you in here this morning, I want you to hear the gospel in the good news of Jesus. I want to invite you into a new way of living and the hope and the promise of who Jesus restores transforms and changes like I don't want your money. I don't need your time is not a project I have for you. Listen to me. Optima look at those on the outside coming in or those who just newly gets saved and we do the same thing. They're actually trying to grow during bible study. They want to change and we start coming down hard on them immediately will just better get changing disc better get changed and the church has been so heavy-handed an Aries. They shouldn't and then there's like the Deacon in the church who goes home every weekend beats his dog beats his wife and kids Michael. He's such a Godly Man. Is there every Sunday Faithfully he served and he does these things and we don't we just shouldn't disrupt what's going on. My redeemers but us specifically but the church generally isn't taking place. Also don't ridicule those don't be handed go with those that are in need of Correction. That's why I love what Chandler says and I stayed a lot and Susan talk about Chandler a little bit. It's okay to not be okay, but it's not okay to not stay. Okay. It's so welcoming. If we saw last week were honored failure. That's what it means to be a follower of Jesus and as a church with incredibly Discerning when it comes to this stuff and what it really comes down to two things. Are you a Christian? or non-Christian Are you humble or are you proud? 10 in our life if we're humble at first reaction Monami begin to listen to move in our hearts and lives we can begin to see change of repentance for tender or soft. Flowering time to work some things out on us, but if we're hard-hearted as a Christian, there's going to be some hard things that happen.

So as we look at this.

And we're going to split this up. I'm sorry, you have to come back next week. But I want to do is I want to talk about the process of what this looks like. I'm going to look at Matthew 18. We're going to look at 1st Corinthians 5:7 to talk about how to handle conflict in general. We're going to look at things like in 1st Corinthians 5 or kind of blows up in their face really look at Titus 3:10. We three will get 1st Timothy 1:20 and then going to look at some practical scenarios and how 1st Corinthians plays out. I had all the attention in the world finishing this out here this morning. But we are going to bring this up because we're not in a hurry and I actually won't take a moment to step back and just worship God before we head into this next week and what I want you to take away from this morning though is we look at scripture? We see the God has called us to be his people called out of this world and he has that I've saved by grace and I love you desperately in the Holy Spirit has come into your life and that you have been change in your life is being recorded. And sometimes when formative discipline teaching is not taking effect and we find her something bad situation corrective discipline is necessary and it is good for your growth for your benefit for your health. And I want us to see that here this morning every prep in to go next week really at the heart of it is the good news of the Gospel. They'll oh, yes, we need change in our lives. Jesus have met us in that place. Jesus me to set the table in our own Brokenness and it is possible to be completely broken and whole because of Jesus at the same time truly is it is possible to be in that place of Correction and being built up and receiving the love of God at the same time and you need to hear that this morning before we move into this next week. Brown.

Lord your ways are so good. I know you have so much to teach us on this over the next couple of weeks.

rush through Adidas service So God, we pray that we let dissimilar in our hearts for the week. And that we would hear it and chew on it and think about it and we would read over 1st Corinthians 5 and Matthew 18, and we read through 1st Timothy and just some areas will receive this happening. That would take you and your words serious. We don't have deep understanding of how to walk that out in their own personalized now. He's a church of remain humble. Proud. And we always have a heart that would want to bring people to repentance in Jesus Christ. We got to go before us worship you and all of our heartstrings stolen by a man.
