Mark (22)

Introduction: Once upon a time, there was an influential family who had a very prosperous sheep farm. The father was a solid man who taught his children the great necessities of work ethic, sacrifice, and responsibility. Their approach to running the family farm was guided by honesty and integrity and the influence of their good business principles ran deep into the community.
On one particular day the Father sent out his oldest son to scout the farm for a rouge lamb. There had been some wolves disturbing the flock and apparently one scroungy little lamb had wondered off. With great determination the son went off into the cliffs to find the missing lamb.
Along the way he found himself in great danger. As he rummaged through the brush he happened upon the lamb in a terribly desperate situation. It had fallen over the cliff only to land on an outcropping and there it was stuck. The son went to work figuring out a way to retrieve the lamb. He tied a strong rope to a sturdy tree and harnessed himself to the rope for leverage. However, as he was lowering himself over the edge, the rope suddenly snapped and he started falling to the bottom of the canyon.
Days later, when family and friends were gathered for his memorial service, many were distraught trying to understand what had happened. Some would say, “What a needless death for a miserable little worthless lamb.” Others would mention, “He was heir to the family business, he was next in line to run the farm, why would he take such risks?” Finally, his family, trying to make sense of his death would ask, “ why didn’t he just ask for help, we could have kept him from harm?”
Transition: Today, we are focusing on a key teaching of Jesus. He is preparing His disciples again for His coming death and resurrection. However, in a similar way to our story, Jesus’ disciples cannot understand what He is telling them. They cannot make sense of how death could be the mission of their Messiah. They couldn't grasp why the Son of Man must suffer.
Read: Mark 9:30-32
Transition: I have two question to help guide us through this passage this morning. What is this revealing about Jesus, and what is this teaching us about ourselves. First....

What about Jesus?

The Son of Man
The gospel of Mark , Jesus’ self disclosure as Son of man in context of; 1. His authoritative ministry (Mk. 2:10), 2. His suffering (in our focal text), 3. His future exultation (Mk. 8:38 & Mk. 14:62) .
Mark 2:10 ESV
But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic—
Mark 8:38 ESV
For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Mark 14:62 ESV
And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
Specifically, Jesus usage of the title regarding His suffering. Read Mark 8:31, 9:31, 10:33-34
Point: Jesus was re framing the foundation of His messianic purpose. (explain illustration) One of the key passages that Jesus was referencing was Daniel 7:13-14 He understood his mission as the Son of Man was to establish the kingdom of God. However, even though Jesus understood His true identity, the way He was going to accomplish that kingdom agenda was a bit confusing to His disciples.
Notice, that as the Son of Man He was…
Daniel 7:13–14 ESV
“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Going to be delivered
Why is this truth so important to understand? Romans 4:25
Romans 4:25 ESV
who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
They will kill him
Why is this truth so important? Romans 5:6-11
Romans 5:6–11 ESV
For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
After three days He will rise
Why is this truth so important to understand? I Corinthians 15:17 (connect with early Roman recipients of the gospel of mark. How would this have encouraged them?)
1 Corinthians 15:17 ESV
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.

What about us?

Beware of a man centered mind. ( Mk. 8:33)
Mark 8:33 ESV
But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
Focused on wrong word.
Focused on power.
Focused on position.
Point: Seek first His kingdom…
Be encouraged that a God centered understanding can grow.
Reminded of Jesus’ words in John 14:25-26
John 14:25–26 ESV
“These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Closing question:

Am I growing in understanding or unbelief?
