Randy Alcorn in his book The Treasure Principle cites the PBS program Affluenza which addresses what it calls the "modern-day plague of materialism." The show stated the following statistics:

  • The average American shops six hours a week while spending forty minutes playing with his children.
  • By age twenty, we've seen one million commercials.
  • Recently, more Americans declared bankruptcy than graduated from college.
  • In 90 percent of divorce cases, arguments about money play a prominent role.

We must constantly be reminded that we are but pilgrims in this world:Hebrews 11:13, 16; Philippians 3:20.
