I want to let you know that I have chosen Deuteronomy because of it’s richness and I knew that God would reveal Himself to us through this book.
My goal when I started as your service pastor was to walk us through who we are in Christ. I wanted us to know that our identities are fully rooted in Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross. That no matter what you are going through or what stage you are in in your life that you knew that the only thing that matters is Jesus. That you are never alone, that you have His power through the Holy Spirit and that you are His beloved.

But I felt that we can’t know who we are if we didn’t know what it meant to be a Christian and what our mission was. So we spent the summer diving into Acts. And we were blessed by His Word and seeing how the early church proclaimed Jesus.

I didn’t think we could fully understand our identities if we didn’t know who God is. Who is the God we are serving! So that’s what we have been learning in Deuteronomy. Who is God and why can we trust Him. How can we love Him more than anything this temporal world could offer?

15 “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers—it is to him you shall listen— 16 just as you desired of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, ‘Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God or see this great fire any more, lest I die.’ 17 And the Lord said to me, ‘They are right in what they have spoken. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19 And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him. 20 But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die.’ 21 And if you say in your heart, ‘How may we know the word that the Lord has not spoken?’— 22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word that the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You need not be afraid of him.

God’s Voice

We were created to have communion with God. We still desire that today but we since sin entered the world this is just not possible.
But God’s voice did not cease. We know that God spoke between Adam and Moses. Enoch walked with God and we can rest assured that that communion with Enoch was not a silent walk.

But then silence from the Almighty left the earth while Israel dwelt in Egypt. It was as if God forsaken them forever but we know that though He may have been silent He was not gone and He was actively working in them and for them as they were slaves in Egypt.

We can assume that God speaking to them at Mount Sinai was not His full glory. With more study into that encounter God giving them the Law was through the sound of Thunder. But the extreme awesomeness of Gods voice made even Moses tremble. It scared them so much that they said if they ever heard Gods voice again they would die.

Imagine that! Gods full glory was not on display for them on Mount Sinai. That the Thunder that made them tremble in amazing fear was but only Gods whisper. That we can’t even handle the whisper of our Lord and even His whisper would consume us and kill us.

God’s Glory on Mount Sinai was toned down to our weakness.

Who has seen and heard an epic Thunder and Lightning Storm. I remember as a kid hearing these storms and I was overcome with fear. I was afraid that any moment the storm would unleash its fury and I would be killed.
That came from Deuteronomy chapter 5

Im not so worried about that today as a grown man but I see the fear in my children when such a storm presents itself. I tell them it will be ok and that they should look upon the storm with such awe and wonder at what God had created.
That came from Deuteronomy chapter 5
But now and again there is that thunder that catches me off guard and sends me back to when I was a boy and that momentary fear in experienced once again.

The Necessity of a Mediator

The Necessity of a Mediator
In His love and Mercy decided to speak to us through a mediator.
There was a necessity for the Israelites to have a mediator because they could not withstand the voice and glory of God. The ear, their eyes or their mind could not endure Gods glory. Like a fire it would consume them and they would die.
So He spoke to Israel through Moses. And Israel was assured that after Moses God would rise up another mediator from their midst.

There was a necessity for the Israelites to have a mediator because they could not withstand the voice and glory of God. Their ears, their eyes or their mind could not endure Gods glory.
Like a fire it would consume them and they would die.

Imagine that! Gods full glory was not on display for them on Mount Sinai. That the Thunder that made them tremble in amazing fear was but only Gods whisper. That we can’t even handle the whisper of our Lord and even His whisper would consume us and kill us.
You see, we now can only approach the Throne of Grace through a mediator. It is absolutely necessary. Because without a mediator we would perish forever.

Who has seen and heard an epic Thunder and Lightning Storm. I remember as a kid hearing these storms and I was overcome with fear. I was afraid that any moment the storm would unleash its fury and I would be killed.

Im not so worried about that today as a grown man but I see the fear in my children when such a storm presents itself. I tell them it will be ok and that they should look upon the storm with such awe and wonder at what God had created.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem, born a baby. Once a man He was tempted, He hungered and thirsted, He wept. He was betrayed and He took our sins and made them His own for our sake. He did this so we would be free from bandage. He did this so we could talk to the Father through Him.
“I have exalted One chosen out of the people”
No longer would God talk through Thunder and His powerful whisper but He sent His heart to dwell among us. He sent His heart to speak to us the message that only brings life. For Jesus brings the message from God. And we must stop and hear that message we must hear that message and let it sink into our hearts and souls.

And as we look through this text we can’t help but see that Moses was appointed at that time as their mediator between Israel and God. Moses and Jesus have strong parallel’s.

Hearing God say,
6 And he said, “Hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I the Lord make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream. 7 Not so with my servant Moses. He is faithful in all my house. 8 With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in riddles, and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

God my God why have you forsaken me
Jesus was always in personal communion with God until that day on the cross when Jesus cried out
That was the only time that Jesus was without the Father. And Jesus knew why because He was being a substitute for all of us.
But I think that the separation from God was overwhelming that Jesus cried out anyway.

There are so many similarities between moses and Jesus that I would have to dedicate that to another sermon. But Moses was for shadowing the person and work of Jesus.

There are so many similarities between Moses and Jesus that I would have to dedicate that to another sermon. But Moses was for shadowing the person and work of Jesus.
Moses was the founder of the Law and Jesus was the author of grace. Jesus fulfilled the Law perfectly to give us a way back to walk with God again in the cool of the day. Moses spoke for God and Jesus speaks as the heart of God.

His Authority

If Jesus was the heart of God, and Jesus is God then we clearly see His authority. He brings the full weight and authority of Heaven to every Word that He spoke.
If sin never entered this world then once we heard that Christ was the chosen mediator we would be rushing to hear every word that Christ spoke. If sin did not blind us then we would write every golden letter on our hearts, in between our eyes, in every space we could find.
But unfortunately, sin has broken all of us. Sin has distorted the truth and some of us talk about Jesus as if it were a story made up in a book. Some of us talk about Jesus with hate in their hearts.
But let me tell you this day that Jesus speaks for God still. Today Jesus speaks as loudly about the Father as He did in the Gospels.
Jesus did not come as a weak pushover. Jesus came with all authority in heaven and His authority and power is written on His thighs.
“KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS”
But if you still hate Him. If you still reject Jesus then you reject the one who sent Him. You reject the Father despite the love He has for you.
But please let me say this clearly and plainly,
19 And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.
Hear that again. “I MYSLEF WILL REQUIRE IT OF HIM”
God looks upon you today with love and compassion. He presents to you hope and requires it of some of you. Yet you have not accepted His salvation.
WHY?
God has patiently waited for you to accept His free gift but you have rejected it.
WHY?
He will require it of you.
Today there is still hope and a chance to accept His love. You will never be able to give an excuse for why you rejected Him. Nothing will satisfy the payment needed to quench His wrath against sin except Jesus.
The day will come when the extended hand of grace will be taken away. That day is when we pass through to the other side. And He will require it of him. He will require it of you.
He will say I called to you. I sent my servant to you over and over again but you denied me. Its too late.
Now you are cast into an eternal death. Why didn’t you accept my free pardon. What were you doing that was more important. Nothing on the earth that you tried to conquer gave you rest. It only tormented you and told you that you were not worth anything. Was pleasure worth it?
Yet my message was you meant everything to me. Rest would be given. Grace would be given an eternal inheritance would be given to you if you love me.
I want you who reject Christ to walk out of this chapel today with this ringing in your ears,
“It will be required of Him”
God did not speak this message to you in Thunder but spoke this message to you through His heart. Through His begotten Son who bled on the cross and died for you. Died for me! But it didn’t end there. He rose from the dead and took our curse and gave us His blessing.
Jesus loves you and requires you to know and love Him. Let your hearts be softened and take His pardon.
Pray with me!
