Entice: When we read the gospels and examine the life of Jesus we all in our hearts fell untouchable. Even when we observe the life of those depicted in the NT we generally see ourselves in the company of the "sinner" and tax collectors, not in the company of the disciples. Well friends, they were pretty much like you and I when they started out-maybe worse in some ways. Whatever growth they experiences combined the teaching of Jesus and their own halting labors.

Engage: Before we move on to other kinds of people Jesus related to I want to take time today to discuss one lesson He teaches all of us... regardless of our background, intelligence, understanding of scripture: Each of us is equal when we bow in prayer. Jesus not only teaches us how to pray...he also orients our prayer life and orders it. Though the "down-to-earth particulars are different for each of us our common humanity and the marred image of God we all bear drives us to petition God. Jesus shows us how to organize this process to deepen our relationship with the Father.

Expand: Matthew's version of the model prayer is better known. Luke abbreviates it a bit for his gentile audience. The content is essentially the same. Our attention to it is not expressed by memorizing it or understanding it's petitions. It is though obediently praying as Jesus teaches us that we develop a more mature relationship with the Father, through Him.
Excite: A rich prayer life will express all of our emotions to a God big enough to deal with them. We will understand Him better. We will learn to restrain our way word hearts, we will learn to align our requests not with the circumstances we see but with the reality of His divine will.

Body of Sermon:

1. Embrace the right Priorities.

Luke 11:1–4 ESV
1 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread, 4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”

1.1 Daily Worship

1.2 Daily Needs

1.3 Daily Righteousness.

2. Embrace the right Persistence.

Luke 11:5–8 ESV
5 And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs.

2.1 Develops relational tension.

God relates to us in such a way that it stretches us, strengthens us and promotes maturity.
God relates to us in such a way that it stretches us, strengthens us and promotes maturity.

2.2 Develops resilient trust.

We all know people who pray with resentment. Irregular in their approach to God they automatically assume the worst. Spiritual disciplines are just that: disciplines. Diligence in the doing brings a richer experience of God. and a more mature approach to our own needs.

3. Embrace the right Perspective

Luke 11:9–13 ESV
9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Shut Down:
Jesus teaches us to pray so that we stop focusing on what we may get and give our attention to what we may become.
When we pray in faith we ask for bread, struggle with the divine will, and beyond all expectations are provided the Holy Spirit! Yes, Yes, The Father loves us and provides what we need.
When Jesus comes to town He leads you in your daily walk, He teaches with daily guidance, and He kneels with us in our daily prayer. When Jesus comes to town He invites us to share in His Kingdom, to share in His Spirit. To share in His Kingdom. Today He is saying, live this way, love this way, pray this way. Will you bow with Him in Prayer...When Jesus comes to town?
