How Am I Entirely Sanctified?

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

Ill: One Sunday on their way home from church, a little girl turned to her mother and said, "Mommy, the preacher's sermon this morning confused me."  The mother said, "Oh? Why is that?" The little girl replied, "Well, he said that God is bigger than we are.  Is that true?" The mother replied, "Yes, that's true, honey."  "And he also said that God lives in us? Is that true, mommy?" Again the mother replied, "Yes."  "Well," said the little girl, "If God is bigger than us and he lives in us, wouldn't He show through?" Submitted by Stan Buck, McGawsville U. M.  Church, Amboy, Indiana.  Differing Perspectives, Witness, Showing Faith.+ PESept86 OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES

I.    I Have Immediate Effects of Justification (pardon)

                    A. My life has a peace that passes understanding – Phil 4:7

                   B. I discover I have joy, patience, and faith – Ro 12:12

                   C. I now have a love for God – 1 Pt 1:8

II.   I Discover a Real as Well as Relative Change

Live in such a way that you would not be ashamed to sell your parrot to the town gossip.  Will Rogers+ PEJul86 THE ACID TEST

                   A. I experience hope and the Holy Spirit – Ro 5:5

                   B.  I have specific changes I want to make – Col 3:5-10

                   C. Now I am able to have Christ’s thoughts – Phil 2:5

III.  I See the Need of Going on to Perfection: perfect love – Matthew 5:48; Col 1:28; Hb 11:40; 1 Jn 4:11-21

It is love excluding sin: love filling the heart, taking up the whole capacity of the soul.

A.   It is based upon three convictions

1.     by faith promised in Scripture(ex. thief on cross) –  Dt 10:16; Jer 4:4

a)     repentance (conviction of our inadequacy)

b)    dependency (on the mercies of God)

2.     divine evidence and conviction God is able to perform this – Mk 10:27; 1 John 3:9

3.     divine evidence he is willing and able to do it now – Mt 8:2-3; Hb 3:13

B. My part is to do works of goodness as I wait – Mt 5:16; Eph 2:10; 2 Tim 3:17; Titus 2:11-14; 1 Peter 2:12

Expect it by faith, expect it as you are, and expect it now!

Philippians 4:7 NIV* And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Romans 12:12 NIV 12* Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

1 Peter 1:8-9 NIV  8* Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9* for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

Romans 5:5 NIV  5* And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

Colossians 3:5-10 NIV  5* ¶ Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6* Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. {Some early manuscripts coming on those who are disobedient} 7* You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

8* ¶ But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips. 9* Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10* and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Philippians 2:5 NIV  5* Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

Matthew 5;48 NIV  48* Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Deuteronomy 10:16 NIV  16* Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.

Mark 10:27 NIV  27* Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”

Mark 10:23-31 NIV 23* Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” 24* The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is {Some manuscripts is for those who trust in riches} to enter the kingdom of God! 25* It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26* The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?” 27* Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” 28* Peter said to him, “We have left everything to follow you!” 29* “I tell you the truth,” Jesus replied, “no-one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30* will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields--and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. 31* But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

1 John 3:7-10 NIV  7* Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8* He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9* No-one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10* This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother.

Matthew 8:2-3 NIV   2* A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3* Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.

Hebrews 3:13 NIV   13* But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

Matthew 5:16 NIV   16* In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

1 Peter 2:11-12 11* Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. 12* Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
