eph 1.3-5
Ephesians 1:3–5 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
Genesis 1:26 ESV
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Our true identity.
But experience tells us that this is not true for us.
In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,
Adoption back into the family that was created in the Garden.
Paul tells us that this occurs through Chrst.
3 “In Him” concepts described which reflect the original identity we had as God’s image-bearers.

“In Him”

Redemption

Bought back and restored to our rightful place in the family.
Redemption: Purchased, ransomed, released, freed from a penalty,
Ephesians 1:7–10 ESV
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
Redemption: Purchased, ransomed, released, freed from a penalty,
Colossians 1:13–14 ESV
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Romans 8:19–23 ESV
19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
Because we are now “in the family” we get to inherit.

Inheritance

Outside of Christ, we don’t know who we belong to anymore.
Originally, to appoint by lots, cast lots. Over time, to inherit, take possession, to be given.
eph 1.
Ephesians 1:11–12 ESV
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:11 ESV
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
Matthew 25:34 ESV
34 Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
How do we know this is true?

Sealed with a Guarantee

Sealed - To identify something as belonging to someone.
Also a seal of approval.
We are
Also a seal of approval.
Guarantee - “first installment, down payment, pledge.”
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
2 Corinthians 5:5 ESV
5 He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
Sealed - To identify something as belonging to someone.
Also a seal of approval.
2 Corinthians 1:21–22 ESV
21 And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
Ephesians 1:12–14 ESV
12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
2 Corinthians 1:22 ESV
22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
Synthesis:
eph 1.
Our original identity is restored in Christ.
It is “in Him” that we regain:
