New year 2019

we're going to look at David and some things that we need to do differently in the coming year I do not want you to think of them as New year's resolutions but has committing yourself to the Lord.

Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

The Bible is full of passages telling us not to be presumptive about how much time we have left

But the fact remains we do not know what this next year has in store for us as individuals and a church and as a nation.

We do know that not everyone will be here next year just like not every one that was here last years they are not here today. and we know there will be other people here that are not here today.

But much of what tomorrow holds we have no Idea. NOr should we know God designed it that way because we are to live by faith.

Many things about tomorrow I do not understand but I know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds my hand.

But the fact remains that there are things we can do this year that will change our lives for the rest of our lives.

It can be good or it can be bad.

The decisions David made at the beginning of the new year. Haunted him for the rest of his life they messed up him his family and his kingdom.

This was a turning point in David's life.

The life before this was one of victory and conquest and becoming great

The Life after this was one of sorrow and crying heart break

Yes he was a man after God's own heart yes him and the Lord had a good relationship but it was a sad life a hard life that no one would want to endure.

God worked it together for good and we had great lessons of repentance and forgiveness that have come from it. we have great illustrations of the consequences of sin that have come from it. We have insights into human emotions from the Bible that we would never have without it. We can see the long-term consequences of short-term decisions.

But no one would want to go through this.

Just read his story it all changes here.

this was the last battle that they had victory and under David. This was where the edge of his conquest and the border of his kingdom stopped.

And you know what I do not believe David started out the year saying this is the year I am going to commit two unpardonable sins one right after another. This is the year I will mess up my family this is the year I will mess up my life.

David what do you have planned this year.

I am going to commit adultery with my councolors granddaughter and to cover it up I will kill her husband. Who is one of my 37 best soldiers. The mighty men.

But he did it. Did he not.

Now how many of you are planning on messing up your life real bad this year?

You see he made a bunch of mistakes that led to the biggest blunder of his life

If we make these mistakes we will ruin the future God has planned for us.

He Rested in the Past 2 sam 11:1

And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

What happened to little boy that went down to the battle were goliath of gath was ?

Is there not a cause

Lion bear I will make him like one of them

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.

This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.

And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD'S, and he will give you into our hands.

What happened to the man that when he wanted to be engaged to the king's daughter

1Sa_18:25 And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

1Sa_18:27 Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

He had bravely fought many battles under saul and now as the king of Israel big battles against powerful enemies.

He was clearing the land of the enemies like they were supposed to all the way back to the days of Joshua

He defeated the army of the syrians

The philistines the moabites

He was a warrior who fought many battles

But he figured it was time to hang up his guns fought long enough hard enough

I have made it to the top

Where does one go from here

I hear people say that You know I wanted to do it than I did it there was nothing left to accomplish I did it all.

Not a good way to think.

He lost his appetite for war for advancement for victory

his vision was two small he accomplished all he wanted to accomplish

he got to where he was just wanting to sit back and enjoy taking an early retirement

Listen whenever you lose your taste for victory whenever you lose your taste for growth you will just begin a decline .

After you have reached the top of the mountain no were else to go but down.

He did not feel bad about it because he was resting in past victories.

You know we can do that as a christian we can do that as a church.

Maybe we have beaten the goliath of lust

Maybe we have beaten the goliath of addiction

Maybe we have beaten the goaliath of a bad marriage.

Maybe we have beaten the goliath of depression.

But what happens to so many christians is they like David get comfortable with past victories instead of finding what else God has for you to accomplish

How do we know that the Lord has more for us to accomplish more for us to win ?

We are still living.

IF we are still breathing there is a reason a purpose for that breath.

And If we could just stop thinking we are the end

If we could stop thinking we are the goal

And just look at ourselves as soldiers in his army accomplishing his purpose.

Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

the point of the brick is not the brick but the house

And we have so many Christians thinking that God made the brick for the brick sake so he could set it on the pedestal and say what a wonderful brick. They cannot conceive a life that is being part of a wall of the Lord's House. I have had people tell me I hate that verse I don't want to be a brick. We have bought into a Christianity that makes the end our self.

So many of us lose our way

We lose our purpose.

like David did when he started out it was so that all people may know there is a God in Israel

But because of the past victories it became so they would know there's a king in Israel

We believe God is here to make our life easier and the best testament to the Glory of God is you sitting in a big house when you die in front of a big telavsion. Look at what God did with him. He made him happy. He was a happy man.

Your life is gasoline to the Lords engine. Are you pouring self in

Or have you like david been resting in past victories

It is easy to rest in past victories because people see the past. All they know about David is his past victories the past is more real to people than the present or the future.

if you got save to your people remember the day you got saved. If you stood up and gave a testimony about getting victory they remember that. They remember when you killed Goliath

but they never know when you forgot about that victory and you are now looking at that Bathsheba past victories have helped many an adulterer skate by in people's eyes.

You see he forgot it was not his throne he was establishing But Gods.

I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

Never forget this is not your rest.

We are To know him and make him known we are to let him have all of us there is to have.

The Lord helped David win every battle he won a lot of them for david

And when David enquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.

Just remember

Now is the time this year is the time

Do not rest in past victories push on ahead a little further till he meets us to say well done.

Never lose the taste for victory.

Never hang up your guns

Never lose the desire to see people saved and born again into the family of God.

I remember a lady that would go to the abortion clinic to stop abortions and she was sucseful many times in persauding young mothers to keep thier children. And she got a great deal of attention from it and rightfully so. But the day came when she was not getting the attention any more or the support anymore and she quit she said I did my part and no one appreciates what I do so I will quit that what I will do, I will quit. I have done enough.

You have to ask yourself why was she doing it ? may be she started doing it for the babies.

Maybe she was shocked to live in such a barbaric society where we are so calloused and she would stand up if no one else would.

Maybe for the young mothers.

Maybe for God and a love for him at least that was what she professed.

But whatever reason she started doing it for it eventually became about her and when it came about her she found something else that pleased her more than saving babies.

David started out for the Lord that is what he said is there not a cause but along the way it became about david.

And when it became about david he quit. Because there is an easier way to please yourself

Bathsheba is a shortcut to the adrenaline that victory brings

Is it about God or is it about you ?

If it is about him than we will keep expanding our boundaries for him.

And never lose our taste for victory

He Dumped his responsibility

You see the battle had to be fought

The ammonites were spoiling for a fight

David had sent his servants to make peace with them after his dad had died but they took him and shaved off their beards and send them back and they were so ashamed because they didn't have a good beard so he let them Terry at Jerusalem to their beards were grown and the ammonites hired 20,000 Assyrians

They had hired the Syrians and David beat them but he never took care of the real problem

The Syrians were just a side effect.

Now it is time again for battle

This city had never been conquered yet

it wasn't like the Philistines that had been beaten over and over

Moses talked about it it is were og king of bashan lived.

But that is what his Job was

That is why God called a king to protect them and to deliver them to lead them into battle.

He dumped his responsibility on Joab.

There is a big difference between delegation and dumping

The reason you delegate is because you need to do something more important

Moses on the mountain while joshua fought the battle he was holding up the rod.

But david was not involved in the battle in the strategy.

He stopped fighting the Lord's battle. He delegated the Lord's battle to joab and then he said about using all his energy to get what he wanted

You know Christians do that too. They delegate the Lord's battle to the church and the people there they pay them to fight their battles. Just like David paid joab

and then like David they put all their energy into getting what they want.

They never visit anyone but they are sure mad at the church doesn't visit anyone

They forget that they are the church. people come to me and say does the church do this? I'm like well do you do that? They say now I'm like well I guess the trick doesn't do it then.

You can't dump your responsibility.

They needed him

This was a long battle I don't know how long it actually was but on paper it looks like more than a year. Unless it's not in chronological order it was more than a year.

They defeated all ammon and besieged rabbah

But he tarried still at jerusalem.

The only time he shows up is to get the benefits.

And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters.

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.

And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.

You ever know people like that they there to take the victory but they did none of the work

He figured out that they could do it without him.

But you know what he forgot

He needed the battle

And he dumped it on Joab because who wants to get all dirty and bloody war is hard work.

Young men want to go to battle till they get to the battle and the blood and the sweat and the people trying to kill you when you get out alive you do not want to go back.

And then go in take the last shot kill the king take the crown

You did not take the risk you did not pay the price.

We have a responsibility to the Lord

And we cant put it on anyone else

No one can love the Lord for you

No one can take the responsibility of prayer off your back

No one can take the responsibility of righteousness from you.

You have a responsibilities to the Lord to be who you are supposed to be

The king had certain responsibilities and he was not to dump them

Guess who will be leading the charge at the battle of Armageddon ?

There are responsibilities you have to be who God wants you to be

As a christian

Beyond that as a mother

As a father

As a church member.

And this year looking forward what is God expecting you to get done ?

Listen when I fail in life

When I fail in the new year it is because of this

I tried to dump my responsibility

I want to lose some weight

Well my wife she bakes cookies and she buys all these snacks and I just can't lose weight with her her fault.

When businesses fail and you ask them why they do not do something it is always an excuse well I am waiting on a buddy he said he would build me a website. Get someone else well I would but my wife does not want to cause trouble with him.

When we fail it is so easy and natural for us to blame someone else. Adam why did you do it? The woman you gave me. Woman why did you do it the serpent. It's a trick as old as Adam and it doesn't stand up to God's questions.

Why do you not start taking responsibility for What God wants you to do?

What does God want you to do this year ?

Take responsibility for that and do not make excuses.

Why did he mess up so bad

Because he stopped being responsible for what he was supposed to be responsible for.

What are you responsible this year?

He Focused on Himself

And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon

This year was going to be about David

This year he was going to make it a point to take some time for himself after all those years of fighting. After all those years in the cave after all those years of running through the wilderness from Saul he had made it he was now King over the whole country a United Israel and he was going to relax

This year he was going to make sure he took a little time to enjoy himself

Enjoy the victory he achieved

Enjoy the view his house was the highest house in jerusalem.

And the view was so nice

I mean forget the fact that his men were in the trenches and all bloody from the hard fight.

I am just going to get some rest.

Rest turns to restlessness

You can only rest so much than you become restless

You will be busy about something.

You show me a lazy bunch of kids and I will show you a sinful bunch of kids

Work keeps you out of trouble.

If not you will eventually get enough sleep than you will be looking for entertainment.

And the lack of war will make you weak to temptation.

The mistake that will make you mess up the coming year will be a self focus.

I was at piano guy comes in trying to get me to join the gym he asked me if I had any goals this new year? I said spend less time at the gym trying to gain some flab I want to be able to float in fresh water in case I fall out of a boat in cold water have less of a chance of getting hypothermia. I mean santa did not get to where he was by being thin. You he ate his way to the top of the world.

What are your goals

He said just really pay attention to my needs take more time off to get myself more things reward myself more. You know just give myself permission to enjoy what I deserve and worked hard for.

he had definitely not spend much time around Independent Baptist it was just too happy about it.

That was David here

The Lord never told you to focus on yourself but on jesus

Not on your goals but his goals.

What are his goals for you this year

If he was to do an end of the year eval on you what would it say

Room for improvement

Opportunities for growth

What are the things you must get done this year for him ?

What does he want you to focus on?

When you focus on self then this is what happens

And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house.

What is a king engaged in a battle worried about that for

He sees her notices what kind of washing it was to signify the end of the time of washing of purification.

He knows whose wife she is and does it anyway.

People get focused on self you know I am trying to please the Lord my family my church but I not pleasing myself I really need to focus on myself.

I am tired of taking the back seat.

He did not think of ahithphel his faithful councolor

He did not think of Uriah his mighty man

He did not think of her bathsheba

He did not think of the Lord

He thought only of himself.

When you go through your list of goals for the coming year

Who is it focused on ?

I want to lose weight, get in shape ? why good goal is it to care for the temple to be a good testimony?

Or is it like the neighbor lady lose weight start getting attention than strat running around on her husband?

Why it should be for the glory of God or it will get you in trouble.

Where is God in the coming year?

Lose your vision

David was supposed to have a vision that included leading his people protecting his people and possessing the land that God gave them

But he lost that vision vision

When you lose your vision for the Lord

The devil will give you a vision

When you lose your focus for the Lord

The devil will give you something to focus on.

Psa_55:17 Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

You know what he used to do when he woke up in the morning pray

When he got up from his nap? Pray in the middle of the day pray

Now he's lost his focus stopped praying

The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and disguised his face.

16 In the dark they dig through houses, which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: they know not the light.

The problem was not what he saw but the fact he had nothing to look at

He did not look over the kingdom and pray

she did not look out with an eye of what needed to be done and what needed to be righted he did not look out with an i to set Justice back in place

But with a wandering eye

What battles does the Lord want you to win this year

What territory does he want you to take for his glory this year

Where does the enemy occupied territory that you are supposed to take

In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Includes Iraq all the way to persian gulf and the good part of egypt.

This year what does the Lord want you to conquer ?

This year what does he want you to overcome ?

This year what does he want you to start ?

What does he want your future to look like?

What does he want you to have accomplished at the judgement seat of Christ?

do you have a picture of yourself standing there? Do you have a vision

Do you have an eternal vision? Or just a vision for the night?

This week's schedule a time to go over the notes from the sermon and ask God what he wants you to get done this year what he wants you to overcome this year and what areas of your life he wants you to work on.

what does he want you to do with your finances this year with your family this year? With your health this year?

This is not a New year's resolution this is a Time to reflect and be committed to God
