Galatians- Freedom - Merrica

Main Text

Galatians 1:6–10 ESV
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed. For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.

Humble, Spirit seeking

Facts/History (mid energy)

This was Martin Luther’s favorite epistle and it was the masthead of the Reformation. Note Luther’s words: “The epistle to the Galatians is my epistle. To it I was as it were, in wedlock. It is my Katherine.”
Paul is mourning that legalism has crept its way into the church
The key word is liberty/freedom, used 11 times in the letter. This is more than all his other epistles combined.
Thematically Galatians is best paired with Romans and 2 Corinthians
Galatians may have been the only book written personally by the Apostle without the aid of a stenographer
The Galatians themselves were an emotional and intense Celtic people. Caesar said: “They are fickle in their resolves, fond of change, and not to be trusted.” This is demonstrated during Paul’s first visit to them. In the morning they attempted to worship him, and in the afternoon to murder him ().

They were wishy washy and led astray easily
They went with the flow and with what seemed right to them in the moment

Cultural Problem
People pleasing
Led Astray - Fake News
Personel Problem
We like to be liked
We all look to please others to some extant
We care what people think about us
We can all be influenced
Freshmen “they are so impressionable”

Intro (high energy)

If you add to the gospel you lose the gospel
It is Grace plus nothing
It is Jesus plus nothing
Dont add, Dont mix, Dont take away
Jesus alone, Grace alone
Jesus unassisted
Grace unaccompanied
Jesus did everything needed (Unassisted) he doesn't need your help, you cant help you just mess it up
Then he gives you everything needed for salvation (righteousness) Grace Unaccompanied. Def: having no companion or escort

Text Breakdown (mid energy)

Galatians 1:6 ESV
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—
I am astonished!! Why? They are deserting Jesus
When you turn to a false gospel you desert Jesus, You leave Jesus behind, he wont go with you there
They would have been surprised by this, they didn't feel they were deserting the gospel, they felt they were adding or helping or supporting
Reversal
Not just false gospel anti-gospel
Galatians 1:7 ESV
not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
So what false gospels are there?
First here we learn of false gospels in the Church
The one Paul is dealing with is that of Legalism or Morality Gospel
Morality/Good Person Gospel
The Prosperity/Health and Wealth Gospel
- The Prosperity Gospel
The Poverty Gospel
- The Prosperity Gospel
The Self Help/Self-Esteem Gospel
Love Wins Gospel
The God will forgive gospel
The Churchless Gospel
The Social Justice Gospel
Then the Cults
Universalist Gospel
Morman
Jehovah Whitness
Islam
Hindu cults
And countless others
Galatians 1:8 ESV
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
False Gospels outside the church. Demonic
Then the Cults
Universalist Gospel
Morman
Jehovah Whitness
Islam
Hindu cults
And countless others
Galatians 1:9 ESV
As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
Abandon any of the above
If you heard it in the church or outside of the church but it doesn not line of with the gospel of Jesus, the Gospel Paul teaches, the Gospel of the Bible leave it behind
Galatians 1:10 ESV
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Problem
But… our ancestors
But… our tradition
But … our family
But … someone told me
But … I have always thought
But … I feel like
But … What will they think
But… How will I be perceived

Solution (high energy)

Listen to God above all else
Stick to Gods word
Hold Fast to the Gospel
Why?
False Gospels have no freedom
They dont work

Joy (high/joy energy)

Freedom
John 8:31–36 ESV
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:31-
John 6:66–69 ESV
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
