Haggai 1:12–15 ESV
12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord. 13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord’s message, “I am with you, declares the Lord.” 14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

We have talked about apathy towards God before…We believe he is there but we disregard his instructions.
Obedience
Something happens when we choose to love someone who, in our eyes does not deserve it.
Something happens when we put the Lord first in our decision making at home, at work, in our ministries
Something happens when you trust the Lord with a tenth of your income.
Something happens when we begin to not only obey his word but begin to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
When we have reverence for the Lord and obey him we are saying "Lord, I trust you!” He stirs our spirit.

Haggai 1:13 ESV
13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord’s message, “I am with you, declares the Lord.”
When we have reverence for the Lord and obey him we are saying "Lord, I trust you!”

The New American Commentary: Haggai, Malachi 1. A Favorable Response (1:12)

They were behaving as though Yahweh were not in reality their God.

Notice the transition from verse 1 to vs 12
John 3:36 ESV
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
In verse one God referred to the remnant as “these people” rather than “my people” They finally began to act like God’s people.
Matthew 28:20 ESV
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew

36 and has given all things into his hand. He that believes on the Son has life everlasting: he that believes not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abides on him.

ἀπειθέω apeitheō; from 545; to disobey:—disbelieved(1), disobedient(10), do not obey(1), obey(2).

They were behaving as though Yahweh were not in reality their God.

ο δε απειθων τω υιω ουκ οψεται ζωην

“and he that is not subject to the Son shall not see life”
Jesus makes this promise to us and his disciples in
Matthew 28:20 ESV
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

His Presence Causes a Stirring In Our Spirit

Haggai 1:14 ESV
14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,
Acts 1:8 ESV
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Something supernatural happens when we decide in our hearts and minds to follow the Lord.

Something happens when we begin to not only obey his word but begin to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.
