This passage points us to the expectation that we move toward maturity. It is assumed that we would grow up and become something more than we are even at the time of conversion. There is a stinging rebuke for staying immature in the faith. It’s like the teenager that lives in your house and refuses to grow up. He wants to enjoy the benefits of adulthood, the freedoms, but he has yet to understand or be capable of taking on the responsibilities.

A wise son makes a glad father,

but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother.

He who gathers in summer is a prudent son,

but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame.

and bitterness to her who bore him.
