Introduction

Good Morning! My name is Danny Watton and I am your service pastor. I want to thank you all for coming this morning! It’s important that you’re here! It’s important because the Bible calls us to gather together for worship as the body of Christ. To hear His Word and for mutual edification. The Bible says,
“For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among you”

I pray that you had a wonderful Christmas and New Years and that you were able to enjoy some time away with family or just got to have a break from the craziness that accompanies this time of year.
During the Christmas season we took a break from Deuteronomy and we were blessed by going through advent. We got to see how God sent His son Jesus Christ to save us from most certain death. And made a way for us to have salvation and experience His love for eternity. We are going to pick it back up in Deuteronomy and glean treasure that is more valuable then gold or any gem that we could find from His Word that He sent to us today.
But before we jump into the text
Let’s Pray!

8 “You shall therefore keep the whole commandment that I command you today, that you may be strong, and go in and take possession of the land that you are going over to possess,9 and that you may live long in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give to them and to their offspring, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 For the land that you are entering to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated it, like a garden of vegetables. 11 But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven,
12 a land that the Lord your God cares for. The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
13 “And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 he[a] will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. 15 And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full.
I pray that you had a wonderful Christmas and New Years and that you were able to enjoy some time away with family or just got to have a break from the craziness that accompanies this time of year.

We know from last time we were in that Moses was reminding the new generation of the last 40 years that their forefathers wandered in the desert with them and their disobedience did not allow them to enter into the promise land.

But in Chapter 11 we see Moses stressing to the Israelites to choose God, To Love God, To be obedient to God.
God wanted to teach Isreal that they needed God and could not live life without Him. So He sent them to Egypt and then again to the Desert so they would see His majesty and power. His love for them.

Moses spent his time mentoring the Israelites of the differences between Egypt and the Promise Land.

Egypt represents us living apart from God. We are plagued to depend on our own strength….our own power, our own cleverness to provide for our own needs.

Egypt was a place where the Israelites had to labor much to produce food. It was a laborious process to irrigate the fields and they had to pump it with their feet.

This people….us Christians….know that we have the love of the Father who is watching us and guiding us. Through everything. We know that His provision over us will provide us rain that will give us life.
I. What does the text say

What does the text say

- First we see the a word reminds us of a crown jewel. Something that should bring us delight and joy when we see it. That word is “eyes”
The eyes of the Lord.
Why is this so beautiful? It’s beautiful because God sees us.
He saw Haggar as well as He saw Sarah. He saw Judas when He kissed Jesus and betrayed Him. He saw the Women at the well and He saw Jesus on the cross bearing the sins of the world.
God sees across all time and History
God is a God that sees. He see you. From the beginning of the year to the end of the year.
Don’t misunderstand me when I say that He is only a God who sees us. He does not merely observe His people but He is a God of care, of action, a God of love.
And because God is a God of Love He sees us. He looks upon us with delight and joy and tenderness. He looks upon us with such affection as a mother looks at her new born child as she is holding her baby in her arms.
And when a mother or parent looks upon their child, its not merely to look at the baby but the mind then is transported to the world of possibilities for her baby.
How they will care for the child.
Where they will sleep, where they will live. What clothes to buy, what food it will eat. What life will this child have and what joys and hurt will they experience.
What lessons can they impart to them to make them strong and capable to live in a dangerous yet beautiful world.
As a mother looks into the eyes of her new born, so does God look at you with the same love, affection, and care.
Think of that Christian. That the unquenching love from the one who created the heavens and the earth. That such a God, the one true God has opened His unmeasurable heart on us poor, insignificant, underserving beings.
And the unfathomable thing is what we learned in Advent this past month. That love was expressed through His careful plan of having Jesus born in a gutter, live a life as a humble servant and then to die on the cross for our sins.
I think I have to admit when I hear that and try to understand that it makes sense that He did that for someone else.
He did it for the world!!!
But when I try to wrap my mind around that He died on that cross for me, I can’t measure what that looks like.
As I was preparing my sermon this week I tried to wrap my head around that. What does that look like to me personally?
And Going through this passage and seeing that “The Lords eyes are upon us” I realized the personal interest that God takes in all of us. That His eyes can be upon us individually at all times.
From each day, to each hour, to each minute and each second He is carefully watching me and interacting with me in love. Developing me for my benefit and to bring Him glory.
He could not do that if He was not God.
Imagine with me, If you were the only one God made. How would you feel as if to be the only child that God would have to look after. You would feel special. Cared for, loved and you would know that your Gods favorite.
As I looked at that I realized that the reality is that we are not the only one but part of a bigger family of believers but His love and attentiveness is still the same as if it were true that you were the only one saved. The eyes of our Lord has never been weary of looking at you. He never sleeps and He watches us with that individual love from the beginning of the year till the end of the year.
He never delegates His
Before we look at what lessons we can apply to our lives I want to talk about something that struck me going through this passage.
And by the way. I am astonished at what we can learn from Deuteronomy. Gods character, His love. The Old Testament has so much to teach us about who God is and who we are in Christ. I encourage you to carefully go through the Bible as a treasure Hunter looking for lost treasure. You will find so much that is worth more than any treasure this earth can give you.
What struck me about
The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.”
Is the personal interest that God takes in us. Is that He never delegated that authority or job to anyone or anything else.
The Bible does not say that he loves us, and therefore He will give charge to the angels Gabriel or Michael. But instead He does it Himself. He takes personal interest in doing this task himself. No other watchman will do.

Finnegan’s Story (Dog Bite)

My son Finnegan is 9 years old not but when he was a baby we had a dog that we loved. We got the dog shortly after Lauren and I got married. And we never had any issues with her.
But on one rainy fourth of July in 2011 I was sitting at my desk at a house we were renting and I was trying to complete an assignment for my bachelor’s degree. I remember that we were enjoying a rare day of monsoon rain with lightning and thunder roaring all around our house. And to add more noise our neighbors were starting early with fireworks.
And I remember what a nice moment that was listening to the rain, hearing the thunder and seeing the lightning out the window. Knowing that Lauren and Finn were playing on the floor in the living room.
And just like that the next moment turned into the most scariest moment of our lives.
That next second after I heard the loudest thunder sound off like a shotgun was the scream of Lauren coming from the living room. I had never heard her scream like that before. That scream jolted me out of my seat and I saw my wife holding my son crying. I still did not know what happened but saw a laceration so big on Finnegan’s head that as I looked closer to see how bad it was I would see his skull. The dog apparently bit Finnegan as he was crawling through the baby gate at the same time the dog was. The dog bit him so hard that it punctured his skull.
We rushed Finnegan to the nearest ER and then was transported to a level one hospital where he was admitted for the next week into the children’s ICU. The same Hospital that Lauren worked as a nurse.
This hospital had surgeons and doctors and nurses that where the best in their field.
The same hospital that saved Congress women Gabrielle Gifford’s after she was shot in the head during an active shooter.
Lauren and I stayed for the next week watching over Finnegan. Loving on him, praying for him and waiting to see if he would fully recover or not.
We knew that Finn was in capable hands with the doctors that were caring for him but we did not yield that authority to them. We would be the one to hold his hand through the night. To kiss him forehead after we prayed for him and put him to sleep for the night.
And thats the same personal and loving interest that God takes to do the same thing for us that he refused to delegate that authority to anyone but His own all powerful, all knowing, all loving eye.
No other watchman will suffice. He does that from the beginning of the year till the end of the year

Application/Conclusion

And now that we are at the beginning of the year,
how can we take this truth and apply it to our lives?
How can this be a most valuable treasure that can enrich our lives and our love for Jesus?
Like the new generation you no longer live in Egypt. You no longer have to depend on your own strength.
You will have your trials and tribulations to come this year, do not expect to be free from trials in your life. Satan is still alive today. He is wandering around waiting to devour.
But here is our joy.
Gods loving eyes are upon us today. God and our Lord Jesus Christ has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. Walk out of here today boldly knowing that no matter what trials or tragedies we are facing right now or that will come this year that we do not have to do it alone.
The Bible says In
that the Father feeds the birds of the air. He says that we are more valuable then they are. If He looks after the birds of the air then surely He would not leave us to fend for ourselves.
Instead we can look to these trails as divine appointments from our loving Father and cast our burdens to the burden bearer.
Let our New Year’s resolution be,
“Seek First the Kingdom of God and His righteousness”
Lean upon Him and He will give you strength
Lean upon Him and He will give you strength
Remember that your Gods favorite and that He did not delegate His watchful authority to anyone else.
No other watchman would do. You are never without God.
For the Bible says
The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.”

Imagine with me, If you were the only one God made. How would you feel as if to be the only child that God would have to look after. You would feel special. Cared for, loved and you would know that your Gods favorite.

That scream jolted me out of my set and I saw my wife holding my son crying.

This hospital had surgeons and doctors that where the best in their field. The same hospital that save Congress women Gabrielle Gifford’s after she was shot in the head during an active shooter.

To kiss him forehead after we prayed for him.

And the same personal and loving interest that God takes to do the same thing for us that he refused to delegate that authority to anyone but His own all powerful, all knowing, all loving eye. No other watchman will suffice. He does that from the beginning of the year till the end of the year.

II. Application/Conclusion
And now that we are at the beginning of the year, how can we take this truth and apply it to our lives?
The Bible says In that the Father feeds the birds of the air. He says that we are more valuable then they are. If He looks after the birds of the air then surely He would not leave us to fend for ourselves. Instead we can look to these trails as dive appointments from our loving Father who is the burden bearer.
Let our New Year’s resolution be,
“Seek First the Kingdom of God and His righteousness”
Lean upon Him and He will give you strength
Remember that your Gods favorite and that He did not delegate His watchful authority to anyone else.
No other watchman would do. You are never alone.
For the Bible says
The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.”
Communion
I am going to ask our ushers to come up and help pass out communion. We are not alone today. We have the power and love of Jesus to guide us and give us strength.
Jesus is not dead but He is alive preparing a place for us to be with Him for eternity. We take communion as a remembrance of what Christ did for us.
He passed every test but he took the full wrath of God so that we could enter rest. We pass out the cup and He said do this in remembrance of the blood I shed for you.
We pass out the bread and remember that His body was broken for us.
We remember that He rose again through His sacrifice we can have ultimate rest in Him if we believe that He is our savior. That he died for our sins and that all we have to do is accept His free gift and we will have eternal life.
Drink the cup with me
Eat the bread with me
