Introduction

Introduction

Issues with sight.
Issues with sight.
Because something was wrong, I couldn’t see properly.
To begin the year by examining how we see things.
How do we see people?
Those outside the church to those inside the church to ourselves?
The different levels of interaction between Jesus and others.
Biggest ring, the masses.

The Attraction of Jesus

People were drawn to Jesus - healing & entertainment
Selfish reasons.
People will come to Jesus.
John 12:32 ESV
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
Yet, how did Jesus respond to their motivations?
Yet, how did Jesus respond to their motivations?
He recognized their need.
And He had compassion on them!
He was also going to teach His disciples something. (Sitting)
Cause us to listen as well and see how Jesus would have us grow.

The Response to the People

When they saw the need, four responses:
Tell them to go away - Make it someone else’s problem or Ignore it.
Mark 6:35–36 ESV
And when it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, “This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late. Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
How we perceive people is often affected by either our sin or their sin.
Race, money, generation. Sexuality, addiction, liars.
2. Fundraising - sometimes we think money can just solve any problem (Can hurt)
3. Give a Pittance (equivalence of just checking the box)
4. Trust the Hands of the Savior (Doesn’t free us from responsibility, but with faith)
All problems in humanity are spiritual problems.
We approach pain in humanity with a single technique.
(Medication, counseling, rest, exercise, money, etc…)
Or we think we just need to tell people to have more faith.
We need to approach it with both.
The people had more than just a physical hunger,
People have a spiritual hunger.

The Faith of the Followers

The purpose of a test.
Revealed to the individual where they were.
This was a test for the disciples. Revealed their faith.
Challenges in life reveal the quality of faith.
What do you turn to in the face of challenges? Medical, financial, family?
The Disciples were turning to their own resources, instead of asking Jesus.
Imagine that, just for a second...
Arabian Nights - Aladdin. Kept wishing for plates of food and sold the gold platters. Infinite wishes!
They had God in the flesh in their very midst, and they were running to their own resources.
We can have that attitude when it comes to salvation.
We try to do it all ourselves instead of just turning to Jesus and asking for forgiveness.
Or, as we think about sharing our faith, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves.
We forget that Jesus is going to be the one to save. We are just the messenger.

Conclusion

ASPCA commercials. Almost not fair. Those cute dogs have us opening our wallets.
But we often have a very different response when we see people in need.
Jesus embraced those outside of His followers.
He didn’t hold a grudge for those who came for selfish motivations.
He didn’t alienate Himself, or allow His disciples to either.
People are broken and need Jesus.
And disciples of Jesus are called to meet them where they are with the healing Gospel.
And God has you in specific families, jobs, neighborhoods, schools to meet needs and greatest needs.
Just as Jesus looked and saw the people and their need, will you?
Just as someone saw you and shared the Gospel with you, will you? Who?
