When Jesus' teaching on money greets the scoffing of the Pharisees, He confronts them for their pursuits of self-justification and high esteemed among men. These Pharisees wanted to be the heroesoes - of their own salvation and in the eyes of the people. But Jesus shows them and us that it's not our place to be the heroes. He has come as the Hero to bring the rescue we need and the Lord we ought to serve. As a new decade arrives with 2020 and resolutions are made for the new year, each of us should pause to ask: Am I aiming for hero status, or Hero service?
