I.        Introduction

A.     Grace is a misunderstood topic

B.     Sometimes the charge is made that there is not enough preaching on grace

C.     In this lesson we will study “grace”

II.      Lesson

A.     Definition

1.      Favor, kindness, friendship (Num. 6:25)

2.      Unmerited favor

3.      We know what a “grace period” is that a creditor might extend

B.     God and grace

1.      God is the God of all. 1Pe 5:10.

2.      God is the Giver of. Ps 84:11; Jas 1:17.

3.      God’s throne, Heb 4:16.

4.      Great. Ac 4:33.

5.      Sovereign. Ro 5:21.

6.      Rich. Eph 1:7; 2:7.

7.      Exceeding. 2Co 9:14.

8.      Manifold. 1Pe 4:10.

9.      All-sufficient. 2Co 12:9.

10. All-abundant. Ro 5:15,17,20.

11. Glorious. Eph 1:6.

C.     Grace is the source of

1.      Election. Ro 11:5.

2.      Justification. Ro 3:24; Tit 3:7.

3.      Faith. Ac 18:27.

4.      Forgiveness of sins. Eph 1:7.

5.      Salvation. Ac 15:11; Eph 2:5,8.

6.      Consolation. 2Th 2:16.

7.      Hope. 2Th 2:16

D.    Misunderstandings

1.      God’s grace is irresistible

a)      Eph 2:1-6

b)      Heb 2:9

c)      Man plays a role in his salvation

(1)    Acts 2:40
(2)    Phil 2:12

d)      Man can resist the truth 2 Tim 3:1-9

e)      Man can resist the HS Acts 7:51

2.      Salvation is by grace alone

a)      Jesus died for everyone Heb 2:9 but not all will be saved Matt 7:13-14

b)      There would be no need of judgment, 2 Cor 5:10

E.      Recent on-line controversy – the need to preach more on God’s grace

1.      less on error

2.      less on requirements which some think is legalistic

3.      But, in recorded sermons there is no mention of grace
