Introduction to Romans, 1:8-17

• Paul’s thanks, 1:8-15

• Paul’s theme, 1:16-17

o The attitude of the proclaimer of the gospel, v. 16a—he was eager (v. 15). Why?

 Because I am not ashamed of the gospel. Why?

 Because it is the power of God unto salvation. How so?

 Because in it the righteous of God is revealed?

 Power unto salvation. Why do I need that? 1:18-3:9 answers that question.

o The characteristic of the proclamation, vv. 16b-17.

• Its potency, v. 16b

• Its revelation, v. 17.

Possibility of being ashamed

• The place—Rome.

• The opinion of the people—highly educated people—threats came to Paul from:

o The offense of the Jew.

o The world

o The contempt of individuals
