Intro: We’re continuing our study through the book of Second Samuel...
Recap: Last time we were together we we looked at David’s conquest over the relatives of Goliath, and then we began chapter 22 we began this psalm of David…It’s is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving most likely written sometime after He became king and before His sin with Bathsheba...It’s strikingly similar to psalm 18 which is one longest psalm attributed to David of which he wrote 73
7I think that this is a fitting way for us to end the year because Conjures up the image of David looking back and seeing the hand of the Lord all over his life
Now there’s a particular order to this psalm....theres’ 5 units of thought to it…but it’s constructed like a “flying V” of sorts...
Praise for the Lord (vv. 1–4)
b. The Lord’s deliverance of David (vv. 5–20)
The Lord’s deliverance of David (vv. 5–20)
c. Reasons for David’s deliverance (vv. 21–29)
Reasons for David’s deliverance (vv. 21–29)
The Lord’s deliverance of David (vv. 30–46)
b. The Lord’s deliverance of David (vv. 30–46)
a. Praise for the Lord (vv. 47–50)
Praise for the Lord (vv. 47–51)
Now verse 1 of this psalm we get somewhat of a time stamp...
2 Samuel 22:1 ESV
1 And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul.
2 sam 22:
So we see here that David had God’s delivering hand in mind when he wrote this psalm and specifically God’s deliverance from the hand of the the former king Saul
Now we’re gonna go on to David writing about why the Lord rewarded him...
Now we’re gonna pick up this psalm in v.21, where David write about the reasons for God’s deliverance...
Now we’re gonna go on to David writing about why the Lord rewarded him...
2 Samuel 22:21–25 ESV
21 “The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. 22 For I have kept the ways of the Lord and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all his rules were before me, and from his statutes I did not turn aside. 24 I was blameless before him, and I kept myself from guilt. 25 And the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to my cleanness in his sight.
2 sam
Here we have some problem verses who just said this...wherever you put the writing of this psalm, at the end of 1 Sam or at the end of 2 sam, there was not a long that we read of David ether about to go into a sin or he’s freshly coming out of one...
So here’s the question…how are we to take David’s writing this?
This is ether David being incredibly short sighted about his sin...
Which is totally possible…why? because we are like this
App 1 - I believe this should be a remember that you will never be in a place where you have outgrown your need for God’s grace
Because wether this was written right after Saul, or at the end of his life. David said these things…and then failed again
Wether it be David running to Gath, David with Bathsheba, or David taking a census of the people…Failure was near…So God’s grace must be near as well
App 2 - Thats why we need others...
Never lose sight of your need for God’s grace...Look what else he’s saying...
Or in this portion of scripture…David exclusively referring to his dealings with Saul…which makes sense
And V.1 alludes to the fact that this was written with Saul in MindSo David seems to describe that God’s hand of deliverance was upon him because David was blameless in his encounters with SaulDavid says in regards to this relationship with SaulMy hands are clean v.21 I’ve kept the ways of the Lord V.22I didn’t turn aside from his status V. 23I was blameless v.24I was clean in your sight v.25And thats what we saw as well...Charles Spurgeon said thisDavid’s early troubles arose from the wicked malice of envious Saul, who no doubt carried out his persecutions under cover of charges brought against the character of ‘the Man after God’s own heart”. These charges David declares to have been utterly false and asserts that he possessed a grace given righteousness which the Lord had graciously rewarded in the presence of his enemies Before God the man after God’s own heart saw himself as a humble sinner, but before his slanderers he could with unblushing face speak of the purity of his hands and the righteousness of his life. There’s no self righteousness in a honest person declaring that they are honest, nor even in their believing that God rewards honest actions, but it would be self righteous indeed if transfer such thoughts from our standing before man into our standing before God…for there…grace reigns This was David describing his standing in the midst of his enemies at that time...

This is a problem considering the amount of sin that was in David’s life…where you put the writing of this psalm, at the end of 1 sam or at the end of 2 sam, there was not a long that we read of David ether about to go into a sin or he’s freshly coming out of one so how can this be true about David? it can only be true if this portion describes exclusively David’s dealings with Saul...And V.1 alludes to the fact that this was written with Saul in MindSo David seems to describe that God’s hand of deliverance was upon him because David was blameless in his encounters with SaulDavid says in regards to this relationship with SaulMy hands are clean v.21 I’ve kept the ways of the Lord V.22I didn’t turn aside from his status V. David says in regards to this relationship with Saul My hands are clean v.21

Strive to be...
I’ve kept the ways of the Lord V.22

Charles Spurgeon said this
David’s early troubles arose from the wicked malice of envious Saul, who no doubt carried out his persecutions under cover of charges brought against the character of ‘the Man after God’s own heart”. ESV15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth. 17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. 18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:15–18 ESV

He goes on to say this
2 Samuel 22:26–28 ESV
26 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 27 with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 28 You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.
David saying things that even Jesus spoke about in the sermon on the mount....He’s saying that God deals mercifully with the merciful…and he deals favorably with those of righteous character…And in regards to David’s dealing with Saul thats exactly what he was…merciful
ESV26 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 27 with the purified you deal purely, and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 28 You save a humble people, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down.

Do you remember how he dealt with Saul? twice he had a chance to kill him…but he was merciful
Do you remember how he deal with Shimea? Mercifully
Do you remember how he wanted to deal with Absalom
App: Let’s see what the bible is declaring so obveously…in a world that is build on “what goes around comes around”What will cause you to stand out as different is mercyReal time mercyThe next time your wrongedThe next time your cut offThe next time your stabbed in the back...Flip the script of everyone....and say…It’s alright…I forgive them…it’s done That might be the saltiest thing you can doSo here David begins How God has delivered him

2 Samuel 22:29 ESV
29 For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness.
ESV29 For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness.
I love this because…David’s mighty men called him “the Lamp of Israel (21:17) But here’s the lamp of Israel saying to God “God your my lamp”
App: Sometimes we over complicated leadership, but at it’s heart Good leaders are simply good followers of God…We go where he goes, and do what he says...Then He continues...

Now David continues to testify of his trust in the Lord...
2 Samuel 22:30–33 ESV
30 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 32 “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 33 This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless.
2 sam 22:30-
What we see here is that David has such a strong confidence in the fact that the Lord will fight his Battles...
Question: Do you ever read statments like that in the bible, and say to yourself “Man, my faith doesn’t look like that at all…I want that!”
How do you get a faith like David’s?…well i think this next chunk of verses…give us an idea..

2 Samuel 22:30–46 ESV
30 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 32 “For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? 33 This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. 34 He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. 35 He trains my hands for war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36 You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your gentleness made me great. 37 You gave a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip; 38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them, and did not turn back until they were consumed. 39 I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise; they fell under my feet. 40 For you equipped me with strength for the battle; you made those who rise against me sink under me. 41 You made my enemies turn their backs to me, those who hated me, and I destroyed them. 42 They looked, but there was none to save; they cried to the Lord, but he did not answer them. 43 I beat them fine as the dust of the earth; I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets. 44 “You delivered me from strife with my people; you kept me as the head of the nations; people whom I had not known served me. 45 Foreigners came cringing to me; as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. 46 Foreigners lost heart and came trembling out of their fortresses.
2 Samuel 22:34–46 ESV
ESV30 For by you I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. 32 “For who is God, but the Lord? So here we see how David’s faith became so strong…He would step out in faith to battle and the Lord would be faithful…then he would step out again to battle and the Lord would be faithful…and battle after battle, day after day, year after year…Here’s the point: David wasn’t born with that kind of faith…It was developed...
What we see here in David is honest recognition that the Lord has been the one who has fought his battles...By you I can run against a troop and leap over a wall v.30...He is a shield v.31...He is my strong refuge v.33 He has equip me with strength v.40, you made my enemies turn back v.41…you are me deliverer v.44
Illastration: I beat there are some people in here who use to be able to do 100 push ups…and now struggle to do 10…it’s because you stopped doing push ups
Illastration: I beat there are some people in here who use to be able to do 100 push ups…and now struggle to do 10…it’s because you stopped doing push ups
Conclusion: In that same way, we do this when it comes to trusting and obeying the Lord
If you don’t take steps of faith in the simple daily stuff…you probably won’t trust him with the big stuff
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
App: Trust Jesus…in every station in your life today

Begin to develop your faith....
One of the things that the enemy desires for you always think of faith and obedience as something reserved for the big things in life…so we say things like “Yeah I’m just trusting that the Lord has a plan for my future, but it’s about your tomorrows, and never about your today...
App2: This should remind us today that the Christian faith is not one of personal excellence, it’s one faith if Jesus’ excellence on our behalf

On the flip side you will never trust in God with the big things in your life if you can’t learn how to entrust the little things to his care

I love this, because this is David looking back at the past 20-40 years…He’s seen his life, he’s seen the battles won, he’s God’s hand in the adversity’s…and it fuels his trust in God for the future....
Gods’ faithfulness in the past…fuels David’s faith…he essentally says 3 big things...
