Deuteronomy 16:16 NIV
16 Three times a year all your men must appear before the Lord your God at the place he will choose: at the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Weeks and the Festival of Tabernacles. No one should appear before the Lord empty-handed:
This is the only story in the gospels about Jesus between his infancy and his public ministry as a man.
The event took place at one of the three major feast held annually by all Jewish people… it was the Feast of the Passover… (the other two… Pentecost, Tabernacle) This was a celebration of when and how the Lord God had delivered them(Israelites) from their slavery in Egypt.
Jesus desire was to do His Father’s work. At the time, it was being part of family tradition in participating in the Passover feast and learning from God himself, through the levitical priests all that God was about. In verse 46 we read that he was “sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.”
It has been suggested that in His submission to God to do the will of God, he gave up his omniscience… all knowing. This doesn’t mean he didn’t know or have the capability of knowing, but that there were things he didn’t know by choice, so he could be fully human in relating to all of us whom he came to save.
One verse that might convince you of this is when he was asked about the time of the second coming, that he did not know, neither did the angels. It was only something that God the Father knew.

Jesus Honored His Father, God the Father in obedience
John 5:30 NIV
30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
Jesus Christ’s obedience was necessary for God’s plan of Salvation
