1 Slide: Title: Shepherd of the Sheep Text: Luke 2:8/ Ephesians 4:11-13 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. Slide:>Ephesians 4:11-13 11 So Christ himself gave (gift) the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Trans: The pastor/shepherd knows the Spiritual Condition of his sheep…knows what they are eating…knows the direction they are going. (Spanish: Pastor Aleman=German Shepherd) 1. The Shepherd knows their sheep. A. The Pastor should know your Spiritual Condition. Ill: My brother-in-law worked on a farm… -knowing the condition of animals is a little different than knowing the condition of people… -The traditional pastor doesn’t know much about the condition of his people until something big happens…bad/good… -That is not what the Biblical pastor does…They know their sheep… -When my brother-in-law sees a cow that isn’t healthy, he doesn’t just say to himself, “well that’s too bad…” -He doesn’t walk up and say to the cow…you want some medicine? He gives them some!!! -How would you respond if I called you and said, “Hey, lets get together I’m concerned about you?” B. The Pastor should Protect the sheep. -One of the reasons Jesus compared us to sheep is because, like sheep, we need protection… >Matt. 7:15 Slide: Says, “15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.” MSG says “false pastors/shepherds” -My job is to equip you to put on the “Full Amor of Christ” (Eph. 6:10-18)…You have to put it on! Ill: Have you ever seen a kid put their clothes on for the first time? -My job is to teach and preach the TRUTH…so that… Slide: >Eph. 4:14-16 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. 2. The Shepherd feeds their sheep. A. Are you sucking the Milk? Slide: >Hebrews 5:11 11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. 2 -Spiritual maturity has nothing to do with how long you have been in church… -Spiritual maturity has nothing to do with your position in the church… -Spiritual maturity has to do with becoming Christ-Like… -Spiritual maturity has to do with producing fruit… B. Are you chewing the meat? -Solid food is for those who have daily practiced/trained themselves in the truth… -That’s called DISCIPLESHIP…following Christ… -That’s practicing the Spiritual Disciplines…not ACTING…Practicing… Slide: Ill: Dallas Willard: “The N.T. is a book about Disciples, by Disciples, and for Disciples of Jesus Christ.” Slide: -Did you know the Bible mentions the word “disciple” 269 times…the word “Christian” appears 3 x’s… Slide: Ill: Grant Skeldon: “I’ve never seen one single story in the Bible where God enters someone’s life and says just keep doing what you’re doing.” 3. The Shepherd guides their sheep. A. Through giving them vision. >Proverbs 29:18 18 Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. -Sheep have terrible vision…Sheep can’t protect themselves… -The Pastor gives direction or vision to the Body of Christ… -Let me give you a little of the vision…Men’s, Women’s, and Senior’s ministries… >Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—everyone—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. B. Through leading them. -The sheep usually do not grow past where the pastor has grown… -The pastor leads by example…and the sheep follow… Slide >Heb. 13:20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, 21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
