Matthew 2:
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
What is the significance of these gifts?
Matthew lists them for a reason
not random
Gold:
Wealth
Power
Royalty
not common to everyone
High amount of respect
Basis for currency in numerous cultures
shiny and appealing to the eye
Frankincense:
Perfume scent
used as a pleasing aroma
Sweet citrusy aroma
used as deodorant, toothpaste, and drink flavorings
used in embalming
Myrrh:
medicinal purposes
piney bitter scent
used as a pain reliving agent

Psalm 72

Myrrh:
