The Gifts of the Wise Men

Matthew 2:
Matthew 2:11 ESV
And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
What is the significance of these gifts?
Matthew lists them for a reason
not random
Gold:
Wealth
Power
Royalty
not common to everyone
High amount of respect
Basis for currency in numerous cultures
shiny and appealing to the eye
Frankincense:
Perfume scent
used as a pleasing aroma
Sweet citrusy aroma
used as deodorant, toothpaste, and drink flavorings
used in embalming
Myrrh:
medicinal purposes
piney bitter scent
used as a pain reliving agent
Why do these gifts matter?

Understanding the Gifts

Gold-
Psalm 72:16 ESV
16 May there be abundance of grain in the land; on the tops of the mountains may it wave; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of the field!

Christ received Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh as His Christmas gifts
His royalty and majesty
the sweet fragrance He would bring to the world
bringing preservation to the dead

Myrrh the representation of His death and suffering in order that mankind could be reunited to God.
