All in the Family

: GOD’S BLESSINGS THROUGH HIS FAMILY OF FAITH

Boaz went up to the gate and sat down looking for the redeemer. The kinsman redeemer was responsible for taking care of everyone and everything that his relative had left behind after he died. If he was unable to fulfill his duty through death or poverty, he could allow someone else to become that kinsman redeemer. God had given this law in . The kinsman redeemer would take all the property and people and treat them as his own and provide a name for the fallen through this care.

This is what Boaz hoped would happen and this is what Boaz did for Naomi and all her husband’s property. He cared for them and redeemed them. Once she had been redeemed, “The women said to Naomi, ‘Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel!” (). According to , Boaz, Ruth’s redeemer, stands in the lineage from which Christ appeared to be the Redeemer of all the world.

Just as air flows through a duct and water through a pipe, God has used family as a means of grace for his people. God’s blessings came upon Ruth, Naomi, and the entire human race when Boaz adopted them into his family. Now, God blesses us all as we are adopted into his family through Christ.

ADOPTED THROUGH FAITH

Galatians 3:7–9 ESV

Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

In and 17, God promised Abraham, really the entire world, that his blessings would be poured out through that special family. But those blessings were not for all of Abraham’s physical descendants. The special covenant blessings were for “those of faith who are the sons of Abraham” ().

Faith made the difference; it was through faith that individuals were incorporated into that covenant in Abraham’s day. It was through faith that individuals lived in hope of that promise through Moses’ day. It is through faith that we enjoy those blessings in Christ today.

Paul said, “And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘In you shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.’ So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith” ().

As we actively live by faith, we too are God’s special family. We are blessed by God and enjoy a special relationship with God if we live by faith.

LIVING THROUGH FAITH

Galatians 3:10–14 ESV

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.

Our spiritual resurrection brings us into a new relationship with God in which we are a part of his family. This new life is built on and based on the family relationship with God established by faith. Before the Law was given, Abraham enjoyed this special relationship with God through faith. Paul wanted to remind us that law keeping is never going to guarantee our familial relationship with God. Paul said, “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them’ ()” ().

Active faith, then, is the basis of our adoption into God’s family and the basis of our life as a member of God’s family. Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us (). We do not remain in the family because we are perfect or because we have done everything just right. Instead, we belong in the family through faith in the perfect work of Christ. This does not excuse our obedience, rather faith is the impetus for obedience.

All God’s blessings for his family are poured out on us in Christ. Paul said, “in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith” ().

APPLICATIONS FOR THE FAITHFUL

As God’s family of faithfulness, we should praise God for all he has done for us. We can’t live perfectly. We can’t keep the law perfectly. We can’t earn our relationship with him. So God has freely chosen to bless us as we live by faith. This should certainly cause us to worship. Paul told us that this grace is to be received with grace because it is entirely of grace. Paul said, “But the Scripture imprisoned everything under sin, so that the promise by faith might be given to those who believe.”

As God’s family of faithfulness, we should live faithfully because of what God has done for us. Although we can never earn salvation, we are required to live with the appropriate response to what God has done. concludes with the reminder that “in Christ Jesus you are all the sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ…. you are all one in Christ Jesus.” ().
