We say we are Christians and Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, why do we allow anything (rituals, religions, entertainment, other people, etc....) take more time and focus than Christ?
TS: Previously we have seen that the author has developed the concept that Jesus is the superior High Priest and is of a superior priesthood.
In this morning’s text, we see that He is the mediator of a new covenant. Jesus not only established a new Priesthood, He fulfilled the Old Covenant and established a new one.
Hebrews 8:1–13 ESV
Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

Intro

We say we are Christians and Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, why do we allow anything (rituals, religions, entertainment, other people, etc....) take more time and focus than Christ?
TS: Previously we have seen that the author has developed the concept that Jesus is the superior High Priest and is of a superior priesthood.
In this morning’s text, we see that He is the mediator of a new covenant. Jesus not only established a new Priesthood, He fulfilled the Old Covenant and established a new one.v
This passage pulls together the old and new and points out how they are connected.

Earthly Tabernacle vs Heaven

Let’s worship our God by listening to His Word. God’s word is Truth and the Truth will set us free. Our Lord Jesus Christ also said “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the fullest!” Our lives can be full if we trust Jesus Christ as our only Savior and God and listen and follow God’s Word. Hebrews 8:1–2 ESV
Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.

Jesus Christ is a High Priest (perfect mediator/intercessor) for Christians to God:
v1-2: Jesus Christ is a High Priest (perfect mediator/intercessor) for Christians to God:
- Notice His position
Jesus is right beside Majesty God in heaven
- Notice His Tabernacle
Jesus serves as mediator
- Notice His Tabernacle
There is a heaven with a Sanctuary which God made, not man!
Jesus serves there, not earth.

Earthly Sacrifice vs. Heavenly

Hebrews 8:3–6 ESV
For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.” But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
Hebrews 8:3–5 ESV
For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”
The priests needed a sacrifice
The priests needed a sacrifice
The priests needed a sacrifice
On Earth, it was bulls and goats
Priests were set apart by God to minister and mediate between Him and the rest of Israel
They served at a copy and shadow of the heavenly.
Jesus serves in heaven, not a copy
Hebrews 8:3–5 ESV
For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”
The Temple, where the Levitical priests performed their offerings and sacrifices, is only a shadow of what is in heaven! Therefore, the Temple in Jerusalem was holy but was only temporary!
Jesus offered Himself the perfect sacrifice
He died once for all

The New Covenant

Hebrews 8:6–9 ESV
But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
Hebrews 8:7–13 ESV
For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second. For he finds fault with them when he says: “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
v7-9: There was Old Covenant with God’s people but the people did not remain faithful to God!
v6-9: There was Old Covenant with God’s people but the people did not remain faithful to God! God already knew people would sin and so a New Covenant through Messiah Jesus Christ was already set as prophesied!
God knew people would sin and so a New Covenant through Messiah Jesus Christ was already set as prophesied!
HE foresaw that humans would be incapable of living up to God’s standards.
He knew we are too frail on our own because of sin.
v10-11: God’s New Covenant will not only impact the mind but will be in hearts and a special relationship between God and people will happen!
God foretold He would change our hearts. Put the law in our innermost being rather than us just knowing it intellectually
v12: God’s New Covenant not only makes way for forgiveness of sins but also complete cleansing of all sins!
He remembers them no more
HE washes sins so thoroughly that they are 100% gone.
v13: The Old Covenant is obsolete and will soon disappear!
The old was fulfilled in Christ’s death and resurrection
The New has come!
Rather than learning the law and trying to conform, the call for the new covenant is repent and believe
Based on alone, what was the Old Covenant like?
v3 – gifts and sacrifices were offered To God on behalf of people’s sins
v5 – there was a man-made sanctuary/tabernacle where God met with people
v9 – made by God after being freed from slavery but people failed to meet the covenant
The New Covenant surpasses it all!
Jesus, God Himself was the sacrifice
He made atonement in Heaven, not Earthly copies
Frees us from enslavement to sin rather than merely Earthly slavery

Conclusion:

2 Simple questions to think about for applying God’s Word from :
2 Simple questions to think about for applying God’s Word from :

1. Are we still hanging on to a faith or religion that is actually obsolete?

Those who held onto Old Covenant were missing the point.
The old was finished and the new had come!
We can expand on this biblical principle…..
Am I hanging on to anything that does not bring me closer to my Creator God?; specifically, closer to Jesus Christ!
sports, food, entertainment, other people, “sabbath” day, other rituals………..
I am reminded of what God tells us in the first epistle by John in chapter 5;
after speaking of the love of God through Jesus Christ and we are to love one another, seems like out of context we read
1 John 5:21 ESV
Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Christians, keep away from idols!
What is an idol? An idol is a false god. Anything that is holding me to get closer to God is an idol!

2. What should we be doing to live out the New Covenant through Jesus Christ?

v1: Go directly to the High Priest in heaven for every need and concern! –
Pray, pray, pray!
v4-6, 12: Always give thanks to Jesus Christ who did much for us, still working on us, promised us eternal blessings!
v10-11: Be conscious of God’s Laws in our minds and hearts and always learn from the Lord!
