Make Christ Your First Choice
There’s a remarkable story in where we learn of the 1st recorded miracle performed by Jesus. He turns water into wine at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. It seems like the party had been going on for quite some time. We know this because because John records that at some point the wine ran out (2:3). It’s at this point that Jesus’ mother elbows Him and says, “Hey Son! Do Your thang.” Jesus replies by saying, “But maaama, it’s not my time to shine.” However, He obeys His mom and serves up the best wine ever tasted. After tasting the wine, the “master of the feast” is blown away. He says, “Usually we put the good wine out first and after everybody has had a little sip we switch out the good stuff for a cheaper wine. But You have saved the best wine for last.”

Did you catch that? “You have saved the best wine for last.” Now, here’s what we can learn from this story. When it comes to the pursuit or the experience of joy in our lives we need to make Jesus our first choice. Unfortunately, our tendency in most situations is to fill up on the “cheap wine” first. We go on shopping sprees, we get involved with the wrong people. We work our fingers to the bone. We gamble. We try drugs, alcohol, or sex to fill the void of joy in our lives. We run away from our situations or we ignore life in the hopes that whatever we’re dealing with will just go away and then we’ll be happier. However, what we have learned and what we know, at least academically, from studying God’s Word is that real joy comes from the Lord.
