“And He will be called...”

Today we light the second candle of the advent season. Last week we light a candle that reminded us of the Hope that was found in the Christmas Season, today we light the Candle that reminds us of the Faith that comes at Christmas.
The first candle symbolizes hope as it is the "Prophet’s Candle." Hope was brought with the prophets message of the Messiah’s coming.
The second candle represents faith, the "Bethlehem’s Candle." Bethlehem’s Candle as Micah had prophesied that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.
◊The first candle symbolizes hope and is called the "Prophet’s Candle." The prophets of the Old Testament, especially Isaiah, waited in hope for the Messiah’s arrival. The second candle represents faith and is called "Bethlehem’s Candle." Micah had foretold that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, which is also the birthplace of King David.
Micah 5:2 NIV84
2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
Faith in the Word of the Lord, and the promises given. Even in difficult times, Faith remains, Faith In Him sustains, Faith in Him sees us through, In difficult times, in dangerous times when all else fails, when nothing makes sense, when it feels like your back is up against the wall in front of the firing squad, Faith In Him is the anchor in the storm, the lifeline to our Mighty God.
So today we light the candle that reminds of the faith in His Word, that the prophecies of His first coming happened just as the had been told, which reaffirms our faith in the prophesies of how He will return.
Pray as we light the candles, we give thanks for the hope and faith we have bc of the gift of Christmas
Today is also the second in our series

“And He will be called...”

Last week was

And He will be called...

Wonderful Counselor
Wonderful being Supernatural, beyond comprehension, Counselor bing one that gives advice, direction, instruction and comfort.

Wonderful Counselor

His Counsel ie His Word (The Bible), more than a suggestion
Now today we move to the next description of character, the next name listed that He will be called,

Mighty God - El Gibbor

El meaning God, and only used to describe God. Further more El is singular so not a god, one of the gods, but The God.
Prior to this use of the term El, it had only been used once in correlating to the Messiah.
Psalm 45:6 NIV84
6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
Psalm
This is beginning to bring into picture an understanding of the Trinity, because there can only be one God, but He exists in 3 persons, 3in1, Father, Son, and Holy Sprit.
Now
Trinity is a topic that needs to be viewed within this passage because of how it begins. Lets read it together
Isaiah 9:6–7 NIV84
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9
I love how this passage of focus begins, we didn’t spend much time on this aspect last week, but we cant move on without taking a moment to see the significance in the beginning of this powerful birth announcement.
incarnation
You know the trend about birth announcements and gender reveals is a pretty big things these days, with everything from cutting a cake to find out the colour inside, to blowing up balloons filled with a colour of some substance. but nothing is as powerful as this.
At first glance it might not be much, but when you understand the significance of these two differing statements, there is so much power behind them.
To draw your attention their look at , , ,
John 1:1 NIV84
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
See from the beginning we see the trinity aspect highlighted Father Son Holy Sprit were all present at creation
John 1:14 NIV84
14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
; ,
John 10:30 NIV84
30 I and the Father are one.”
,
Philippians 2:6–7 NIV84
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
; ,
This pointing us to who Jesus was, Fully God and Fully man.
Not 50% God/50% Man , not 100% God/0% Man or 0% God/100% Man , He was in fact 100% God /100% Man
As our STATEMENT OF FUNDAMENTAL AND ESSENTIAL TRUTHS From our Fellowship states
STATEMENT OF FUNDAMENTAL AND ESSENTIAL TRUTHS
“ The Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal and only begotten Son of the Father, is true God and true man.
The Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal and only begotten Son of the Father, is true God and true man.8 He was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,9 and by His sinless life, miracles and teaching, gave full revelation of the Father.10
He was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and by His sinless life, miracles and teaching, gave full revelation of the Father.
He died upon the cross, the Just for the unjust, as a substitution sacrifice. He rose from the dead. He is now at the right hand of the Majesty on high as our great High Priest. He will come again to establish His kingdom in righteousness and peace.”
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,
Child is born speaks to His Humanity, coming in human form. Born through childbearing, and in a Cattle Stall at that, a humble beginning for the Messiah. Our Messiah that would pay the ransom for our sin.
For all have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God
Romans 3:23 NIV84
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 NIV84
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Only able to be the Messiah that would pay the ransom for our sin because of His Divine nature, fully God, overcoming the power of death, as seen in His resurrection.
He is Fully God and Fully man, He is Jesus.
Luke 1:31–35 NIV84
31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” 34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.
Luke 1:31-35
“You will be with child and give birth to a son” - This speaks again to his humanity, fully man.
“ give him the name Jesus” - Jesus the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew name Joshua meaning - “The Lord is Salvation”
This child that you will have, which will be fully man will bring Salvation to all man kind, for this child that you will have is also
“the Son of the Most High” “the Son of God”
The child that you will have is the Son of God, is Emmanuel God with us and His name is Jesus because He will bring salvation.
Back to our passage of focus for this series,
Isaiah 9:6 NIV84
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
If we were to brainstorm the word Christmas - the word manger would almost always come up at soem point.
I mean it was a manger that He was laid in that night. But see the child born and laid in that small wooden manger, grew.
He grew into a man that would walk with perfection.
Would leave a trail of miracles along his travels.
And as we looked at last week would leave people in a state of awe and amazement at His authoritative preaching and teaching.
This is the child that was born, the Son that was given.
And He was born in Bethlehem of Galilee
Now when Isaiah was giving the prophecy that we are so familiar with, the people of Galilee were in a dark place. As according to we see how sin and pagan ways yet again entered in, and the area was overtaken.
The Remnant were in need of hope, they needed a source of Light, and the prophesied Messiah, the Promised Christ became that light.
Isaiah 8:19–22 NIV84
19 When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.
Isaiah 9:1–6 NIV84
1 Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan— 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder. 4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. 5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
,
the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali and Galilee these are the places taken in ,
they needed a source of Light.
Matthew 4:12–17 NIV84
12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he returned to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: 15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
Matthew 4:12-
He became the Light that was promised and began by preaching the Kingdom of God is near.
Now wait just a moment, “the Kingdom of God is near” or has come near.... the greek verb used here means “has come”, “has arrived” or “is here”
Luke 17:20–21 NIV84
20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.”
Luke 17:
Holy Spirit dwells within you when you invite His lordship His kingly rule into your life.
The Kingdom of God is of upmost importance, that’s why our mandate is not focused on making MCA a giant organization, but our mandate focused of expanding the Kingdom, yes here in the Kawartha’s, and yes around the world.
It’s about the Kingdom.
What Does the Kingdom mean for me?
Deliverance - once chained to sin and the curse of death, now freed, the chains are broken in His Kingdom, Under His Kingly Rule we are not bound to sin and death, but bound to righteousness and life. Though this body will expire at some point death no longer has a grip on my soul.
What Does the Kingdom mean for me?
It means :
A New View on Life
A New Approach to Life
A New Power in Life
A new Joy in Life
And this Kingdom could not be established my man alone, but required one that was fully man and fully God
The establishment of this Kingdom could only be brought by a Mighty God
The Mighty God.
Today we look at who He is as Mighty God.
El Gibbor
What makes a Hero a hero? Someone to look up to, to respect, to aspire to be like. Someone that steps in with a self sacrificing approach, a others first mentality, in order to help, protect, serve, rescue.
What makes a Hero a hero? Someone to look up to, to respect, to aspire to be like. Someone that steps in with a self sacrificing approach, a others first mentality, in order to help, protect, serve, rescue.
Police, firefighters, service men and women they put their lives on the line for the safety of others, this falls under the hero category in my perspective.
Then you have super heros, all the aspects of heros but with the added aspect of some super human abilities, beyond the ordinary, power or ability. Now fictional but oh so entertaining, super human speed, or strength, the ability to fly, tela transport, defi laws of nature, control the weather, move things without touching them, oh the list goes on and on.
But other than comic books, movies, or series, there is one place you can read about a non fictional person, that had and portrayed all of these and more.
Tela-Transport - The disciples were together in a locked room and suddenly Jesus appears with them...
To move things without touching them - The stone was rolled away
Defi -the laws of nature - try walking on water
To control the weather - storms wind and waves silenced at his word
Fly - look to how he left, and keep your eye to the sky for how He will return
The fact is Jesus truly is our Super Hero, He has all the ability of a god, because He is not a god, He is God.
Hero because He laid it all down to save all of humanity from a destiny of death, to re-write that destiny as opportunity to rule and reign with Him, along with an abundant life now.
He truely is our Supernatural Hero
El Gibbor - Mighty God
We already looked at the El aspect of this name, God
Gibbor - speaks to the heroic nature of our God.
Gibbor - strong mighty powerful hero
He is my Strong mighty powerful heroic God
When Im feeling down - He is my Strong mighty powerful heroic God
When sickness is attacking me - He is my Strong mighty powerful heroic God
When my friends desert me - He is my Strong mighty powerful heroic God
When my enemy has cornered me - He is my Strong mighty powerful heroic God
When I feel defeated - He is my Strong mighty powerful heroic God
He is is El Gibbor Mighty God.
Mighty God.
At Christmas we have been given a Savour, a Redeemer, Jesus who’s name means God saves, is our Mighty God.
Jesus - God Saves
Jesus our Mighty God who supplies for our greatest need, has always been within reach at the moment of your greatest need.
Revelation 1:8 NIV84
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

He has always been and all ways will be Mighty.
Always been a Mighty redeemer, a Mighty Savour.
Exodus 6:6 NIV84
6 “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.
Ex
Deuteronomy 11:2 NIV84
2 Remember today that your children were not the ones who saw and experienced the discipline of the Lord your God: his majesty, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm;
1 Kings 8:42 NIV84
42 for men will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,
Psalm 77:15 NIV84

Isaiah 40:10 NIV84
10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and his arm rules for him. See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.
Psalm 136:12 NIV84
12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm; His love endures forever.
Throughout the OT we see how God delivered His people by His outstretched mighty arm.
Then in the New Testament we see His outstretched Mighty Arms on the Cross which has paid for, has brought deliverance, healing, provision for your greatest and every need.
The only differeance is now we are the ones needing to reach our hand out, not to make a way, or provide, but reach our hand out to receive what He has given.
In a place where you feel overwhelmed and under equipped, reach out to the hand of El Gibbor
In a season of fear and trembling, reach out to the hand of El Gibbor
In a relationship on the rocks, reach out to the hand of El Gibbor
Facing a giant beyond your ability, reach out to the hand of El Gibbor
In a place of need, reach out to the hand of El Gibbor
This morning as we close off, if you are in need, would you just take these next few moments, and reach a hand out and ask for His presence, the presence of El Gibbor Mighty God to be revealed in your situation.
