We looked at what the role of the Spirit of God was in the world:

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Conviction of Sin

- the mission of Jesus. The Holy Spirit is working/testifying to that mission. He convicts the world of sin which is not the sin of lying, lust, it is simply not believing in Him. Everything else is a symptom of that choice.

The Scripture testifies, "He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him" (). At the end of John's life, the apostle wrote that if we do not believe, we are making God a liar. By our refusal to believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God who bore the sins of the world, we are blaspheming the Holy Spirit. If we refuse to believe, we call the Spirit a liar, for we reject the record that God gave of His Son (see ). - Living Water Pastor Chuck
I know many do not want to hear this but the Lord will judge us for our sins. :

This reminds us of Gods judgment to come. We also read this in other places. Yet we also know that salvation of the judgment comes from the Lord .

9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
The Spirit continued the work of Jesus
If we want to avoid judgement we needs the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

How do we know - by our fruit. What does that look like, it is a full submission to the Lord. Without that there is no full seeking/confession of Him. The confession reaction is submission.
Conviction of Righteousness
Now, sin is doing the wrong thing; righteousness is doing the right thing. Sin is missing the mark; righteousness is hitting the mark. (Living Water - Pastor Chuck)
No unrighteous will enter heaven. That is the end game but now no person in an unrighteous life will inherent the abundant life either. (; )

21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Jesus also reminds us those who where with Him that our righteousness must exceed the righteousness of the Scribes and the Pharisees. They lived outwardly but inwardly they were filled with unrighteousness.
Our only righteousness can be found in Christ alone. Not in knowing Him but full surrender to Him. We are not saved by our works. The only standard God will except is perfection. We cannot attain that without Jesus Christ. It is His live we must accept, His death as our own. Here the Lord will see Him and not us as He takes our place. none of our works are good, they are all filthy.

6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.
A good reminder for us: if we could live perfect from here until our death. We still must remember all our past sin must be atoned. We cannot choose now to live perfect, it must be from birth to death and Jesus alone has done that. That is why He is able to be our sacrifice.
The Spirit Convicts of Judgement

When Adam yielded himself to Satan, he became his servant and thus the devil gained dominion over the earth. As Paul said in , "Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one's slaves-whom you obey, whether of sin to death, or of obedience to righteousness?" We are not redeemed with anything other than the perfection of Jesus. He has taken back this world at the cross. .

First we need to understand that the Holy Spirit is desire to carry out the mission of Jesus which is to seek and save the lost:
18 knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.

That is why Jesus came to this world, that is why He gave up everything:
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.
Jesus did that for you and I. So this brings me to the first way The Spirit is in the Christian.
We see that there are three distinct ways the Spirit will work in the believer. We also see from Scripture that there is a very distinct difference between each.
I also want to let you know that water baptism and the baptism of the Spirit are different.

Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
We see that when Peter delivers his message in that he says this:
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
There seems to be two things that happen here: 1) The repentance that leads to salvations, baptism or the identity with Jesus, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
We also read in That Saul was saved on the road to Damascus, then later he has hands laid on him to recieve the Holy Spirit:
And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.
Acts 9:
You actually see here that He is saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, then water baptized. I point this out because I want you to see there is not set box that we are required to stay in. God can move in any way He chooses.
Let’s look at the three different ways the Spirit is with, in and upon.

It actually happens before we are saved as the Spirit is
The reason I reminded us what we talked about last week is because the Spirit begins His work before we are saved as he is with us. He convicts us of the sin and points us to the Savior.
And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
This is the promise that Jesus was giving the disciples as He tells them He is leaving.
Yet He says i will not leave you alone.
Philip then asks to see the Father and Jesus says to him if you have seen me and known me you know the Father.
He also says He will be leaving and will not leave them alone. Then we read this. What a promise to have our Lord never leave us.
But I want to focus in on the end of verse 17: “For He dwells with you...”
This word is Para, or along side.
This is where the Holy Spirit begins in the believer. He never leaves any of us alone in this world. Just as He did not leave the apostles alone, we too are not left alone.
We are His, before we are saved we are still loved by Him that is why the Spirit is next to us.
He never leaves us to our own always pointing us to the Savior before we are saved.
I think of a tug boat. How it so gently is able to move great ships without harming them. they are Para, with the ships. Along side them moving them to safety.
This is where it begins as we are redirected by the Holy Spirit. And just like the boat can move away from the safety of the tug boat so can we move away from the Spirit of God. It is not advised to do so, but the Spirit will allow our will to prevail if we choose.

Jesus also says the Spirit with be “in you.”
We know this to be a different word than with you. We could also read it this way: “He is going to dwell in you.” This is what we know or understand that happens at our conversion.
Some suggest that the filling of the Holy Spirit and the baptism of the Holy Spirit are the same thing.
Yet there is a clear distinction between them in scripture.
The Holy Spirit at our conversion changes his role from next to us or with us too in us as we invite Him in.
So I mentioned the tug boat a moment ago. But there are some ports that are so tricky to navigate that they have Specially trained captains that come aboard your ship to pilot you to safety. They use tug boats but there comes a point were the captain needs to invite this other boat captain to navigate through the terrain.
This is what happens as we invite the Holy Spirit into our lives. You see we cannot this live life alone.
We will never experience true abundant life.
We have the Spirit guiding us as we let Him in our lives
Salvation is when we move from slaves of sin to children of the King
So many thing freedom is found in finical things, being set free from a person, but none of this is real.
This is the only way we will really live it is when we invite the Spirit in our lives. When we let Him pilot us to the shores.
This is salvation, and it is the power of the Spirit that allows us victory over the grave. We are now children of the King.
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

We have the Spirit alive in us as we become His. This gives us power to over come sin as well. We are are no longer slaves to sin but real.
Now we also see the Spirit is in the believer in one other way:

This is what this power is.
This is where we get our word dynamite from as well as dynamic.
I have often explained this power from God like dynamite, but the explosive power is not really under-control and it destroys.
Recently I heard it described as dynamic which I really like to explain this power.
The dynamic power of God which to me is more applicable then explosive.
Let me return to this word upon or epi, that we read in verse 8
This is a picture that is so powerful as the Spirit comes upon us or overflowing out of us.
The result of the filling of the Spirit is an overflowing of the Spirit of God. It is all over and in some ways uncontainable.
This is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, the indwelling, the fire, whatever you want to call it I just know I want it.
And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
This some say is the filling of the Holy Spirit or the picture of what was to come.

This we believe is when the disciples were saved
There was no raise your hands to be born again, or come to the front of the chruch.
This was how they were converted from knowing God, to having a real faith and relationship with Him.
Then we see that there is another explanation:
On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
Jesus says there is more to come after He leaves, there will be a flow of living water that will come out of each of us.
This is the explanation of at the day of Pentecost.
I find it interesting that this power, this overflowing work of the Spirit was a requirement by Jesus before they went into ministry.
Today it seems there is a lacking of a calling and a filling of the Spirit.

We find many who are college grads, who can hold the position as they navigate through the interview process, and hiring boards.
There are many who have positions of ministry because they may have skills.
All the talent in the world is not good enough.
We need the filling of the Spirit to be used in a might way.
We need all He has for us. We do not want to be people focus on the worldly and not on the spiritual.
The apostles were not these highly educated men. They were normal men filled with the Spirit:

And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
I need us to seek the Holy Spirit and For Him to be flowing out of us and not just in us. It is good na right to have Him in us;
But it is not enough as God wants to do more with us if we are willing to open up to Him and say fill me.
We do not heed to fear for God will never give us a rock if we ask for bread.
