Introduction
The return of Jesus as Lord and King can be taken two ways.

In the New Testament one verse in twenty-five deals with the Lord’s return. It is mentioned 318 times in the 260 chapters.

The return of Jesus as Lord and King can be thought of in different ways. His return in this way is obviously with reference to his authority. There are different ways that will be received. For some the reveal of Jesus and his coming with the consummation of his power will be the happiest day of their life, and for others it will be the worst. We need to make sure to keep both sides of this coin in mind when considering it. Jesus’ coming as Lord is certainly terrifying and awesome, but it is also beautiful and lovely.
“Those who have loved his appearing” ()
There will be those who will shrink back at his coming ()
My goal is not to talk about everything that is going to happen when Jesus returns; to lay out the chronology of events or specify everything that has been prophesied to take place. Instead, I want to discuss the tone and emphasis of it, so we rightly understand its point and purpose.
2.
1 Thessalonians - The coming of Jesus is comfort and joy to a believer, be ready!
3:11-13 - Believers are to increase in love, to be found holy and blameless in front of him, as those who can stand in his presence and welcome his coming.
This “sandwiches” the larger more familiar part of Christ’s return with 5:23
5:23 - God is working in the believer so that they might be presented to Jesus at his coming
These points almost sound like a welcoming committee!
The ones who have been prepared to welcome the King as his comes to claim what is his.
4:16-18 - Clearly a picture of victory that the believer is supposed to be comforted in. Jesus’ victory makes everything right and we are to take comfort in that.
2 Thessalonians - Christ revealed victoriously, to take vengeance and inflict punishment, but also to be glorified by those who are his.
1:6-9 - Those who stand guilty when Christ returns can expect a terrifying conquering of the coming King.
1:10 - The coming Lord will be worshipped by his loyal subjects, so we must prepare ourselves
- Jesus exaltation and glorification for his victory
Jesus is going to return as the one who was glorified and demonstrate his victory (v.9)
Everyone, with him or otherwise will bow, and confess that he is the one who is Lord (vv.10-11)
I always find myself getting emotional at this picture, of Jesus who has returned from battle and has been found victorious. Jesus sits on his throne and is glorified as the victorious Messiah as his reward. What a beautiful, moving picture.
3:20-21 - We await our Savior King who will demonstrate his power and transform us to be like him.
The combined picture - Jesus will come as the victorious King, glorified for what he has accomplished, and will finally present himself before his kingdom so that they will acknowledge his sovereignty, and glorify him whether they want to or not. Jesus will win. Some will be found to be on his side, and others will not.
1 thess 4, 3:12-13, 5:23 2 thess 1
- jesus has been crowned and endowed with authority
, for those who have tasted and walk away, but application to others too
Which side do you want to be on?
Scripture ends with the statement pleading for Jesus return. In his revelation to John Jesus says, “Surely I am coming soon” (). John says, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” Can you say that? With that excitement and expectation? Do you wish the return of Jesus, to show himself the victorious King and present himself to his creation? Or does the thought of that give you a sense of fear?
