Scripture Reading 1 John 3:19-24
Opening Prayer
Introduction
Have you ever felt inadequate? Not prepared for a task or job? Have you ever bitten off more than you could chew?
As children we were used to the feeling
As adults, we get uncomfortable when we set out on a task and are unable to complete it.
Exposition 1 (19-22)

I. Be confident that God has redeemed you, even if your thoughts and emotions bring doubt (19-22)

Subpoint 1 (19a)
1 John 3:19 ESV
19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him;
By “this”
What is this?
Everything that came before but especially vs. 18
Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
So, by this we shall know that we are of the truth

A. Your true love for one another testifies the truth that you are a believer (19a)

Subpoint 2 (19b-20)
1 John 3:19–20 ESV
19 By this we shall know that we are of the truth and reassure our heart before him; 20 for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.
Reassure our heart.
What is meant by heart?
Greek kardia
literally the physical organ of the heart
The use here however is figurative, not literal
In English, we hear our emotional core
In Greek, it is the mind, or inner being, it includes our emotions but is more deeply rooted in how we think.
for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything.

B. Your minds bring doubt but God is greater than your doubts (19b-20)

Subpoint 3 (21-22)
1 John 3:21–22 ESV
21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

C. You can be confident in your salvation because of Him (21-22)

God declares salvation
God answers prayer

I. Be confident that God has redeemed you, even if your thoughts and emotions bring doubt (19-22)

Exposition 2 (23-24)
1 John 3:23–24 ESV
23 And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. 24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given us.

II. Believe, love, and abide. Then know by the Spirit.

Trust and obey
